North Korea has nukes.
South Korea doesn’t.

Obama has said he would not retaliate even if a US city were nuked, so S. Korea is screwed.

Even if the arms were equal, it’s sort of like being challenged to a game of “chicken” by a guy driving an old beat up Yugo with a smoking engine and four flat tires and you are driving a brand new shiny high performance Porsche.

South Korea is not a force I would like to oppose. In addition, Japan has checked in and it pissed. We have major assets that have been moved into the area over the last year or so.

It isn’t going anywhere unless NK is looking to really get it’s butt kicked.

SK is fighting a defensive war, which is far easier. Their troops are better trained, equipped and motivated.

But a WHOLE lotta people would die.

I don’t have the exact details on equipment and weapons systems, but North Korea’s military is mostly junk. Have you ever noticed that when they have military parades, there’s no tanks or aircraft? That’s because all the ones they have are embarrassingly outdated.

The main reason for NK’s nuclear program is that their conventional forces would not last long in a war. They lack the fuel, spare parts, and industrial capacity to sustain a prolonged conflict. But they could still cause a heck of a lot of damage in the opening weeks of a war.

North Korea doesn’t care how many of it’s people it kills, starves or maims.

North Korea has nukes, and doesn’t care about world opinion or diplomatic responses. It is my opinion, that they are itching for an excuse to touch one off, even if the excuse is a response from their aggressive behavior.

South Korea has no nukes, is concerned about their population and is concerned about collateral damage.

Jughead won’t lift a finger to help our ally. South Korea is screwed.

"But a WHOLE lotta people would die."

Yep. They're at the mercy of their own geography, much like Israel.

I hope the Allied nations know were all the Nukes are and have the means to take them all out before they can respond. I think it is getting to the point were the Norks are going to have to have their military capabilities taken out by any means neccessary, they are getting too reckless for it to be sensible to be allowed to keep them....

Although the norks have fearsome numbers, there is a qualitative difference as well. For instance, this is the ROK K1A1 MBT....

...in many ways it's a little Abrams, better suited to the terrain, road network and urban fighting likely to occur in a conflict on the peninsula. The norks are still fielding primarily T-55s and T-62s. There are similar disparities in aircraft (i.e. F-5s and F-16s vs. Mig 17s and 19s although I do believe they have a few 29s as well.

NK troops are cannon fodder. SK has the capacity to send stragetically targeted missles to an arm lengths list of placed that will render NK up a creek. Most of the NK people will not be siding with NK during a prolonged conflict. A LOT of people will die but I’d side with SK when they get it on.

anyone remember the Iraq vs US comparison? On paper Iraq had a formidable force, but in practice the military didn’t exist

“South Korea has no nukes, is concerned about their population and is concerned about collateral damage.”

And since they’re a major industrial nation, a war would really disrupt the global economy. Think about it: Go into Best Buy and all the Samsung and LG HDTVs are gone because the factory got blown up. Or your local Hyundai dealer has to close because he can’t get any new cars to sell.

I saw a picture (on FR I think) of a US soldier and an SK soldier ecorting a NK soldier back across the border. I believe he had gotten lost. The US soldier looked to be about 6’ 3”, about 200 pounds, and the perfect model of a soldier. The SK guy was significantly smaller, but still impressive in appearance. The NK soldier looked about the same size as my 11 year old, except my 11 year old is in better physical condition.

If Japan wanted to help South Korea, what could it do?

Perhaps offer some air support, but what else? Just a token amount of ground troops?

We should know by our own American Revolution that military strength has nothing to do with the final outcome. You have to have purpose to sustain your will to fight on, and there is no greater purpose than fighting for your own freedom.

There will be no war. China will not permit it—they have a great deal of voice in North Korea. In a one on one match South will beat North. The North just wants more aide. Omaba will give it to them too.

Yes, and I am partial to Asians. The SKs are a gutsy people, and The NKs would be too if given half a chance. I am praying for no war
