It’s funny how so many “know-it-alls” are here hollering “overhyped!!!”

How the hell do any of you know what you’re talking about when you’ve never seen this happen?

A couple of the high altitude tests disrupted communications in Hawaii for a few hours. That's because the weapon detonated high enough,248 miles, for the thermal pulse to convert to electrical energy.

Dominic Starfish Prime 248 miles

Anything close to atmosphere generates a fireball and limits the impulse.

Bluegill Triple Prime 160,000 feet

There was also the Argus tests conducted off of South Africa to test effects on the magnetic field and communications, but there is very little information available about them.

We currently prevent EMP attacks by assuring the nuclear destruction of any country that launches one against us.

Right you are! Because it takes more than a garden-variety fission device to cause the kind of catastrophic EMP event discussed. It wasn't until the Starfish Prime experiment involving the explosion of a 3 megaton fusion weapon that EMP as a crippling phenomenon became a reality. And we already know the nations with such capabilities. Their capitol cities along with much of their countries would be vaporized in a sub-launched retaliatory strike. And they know this.

"... EMP is overhyped, unless it bursts overhead;)..."

Friend, you are either very misinformed, or very uninformed. The threat posed by HEMP (the "H" is for "High") is very real, and could be our undoing.

“And who do you nuke if a container ship with a Liberian flag lights one off 50 miles off the NJ shore and air bursts it over south Jersey taking out the Northeast corridor?”

Pick someone and nuke them. Or several someone’s.

It would be better that we publish the list in advance.

Life isn’t fair, and the rest of the world would then know what could happen to them if they do this.

It’s similar to the “Doomsday bomb” in Dr. Strangelove.

But first, use the neutron bomb

Only if the Chinese sell us one. The US version was never developed — too horrific, you know. However, the Chinese did and tested several on remote (muslim) villages with 100% success.

was believed to be an Israeli test at the time.

Can EMP be turned into a focused weapon, such as that may be deployed from a plane, drone or parachute over lower altitude? Or does it require ionization in the lower atmosphere? I have seen “EMP” devices exploded by Hollywood, in “24” (@ “McClennan-Forrester” HQ) and also “Ocean’s Eleven” (takes out Las Vegas’ electric grid for a few minutes). Are those portrayals scientifically accurate or possible?

All of the usual suspects.

It could be our undoing because what will our kids do when the X-box doesn’t work, or their MP3 players are dead, or the interwebs aren’t working!!!!!!!

While I agree that it would hurt America as a whole, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, specifically in rural areas where we can still hunt, fish, grow crops, and get water without the aid of “the grid” or big brother.

Friend, you are either very misinformed, or very uninformed.

Sorry pal. I used to sleep with the damn things (nukes). Stick to TEOTWAWKI books and Tom Clancy books FRiend.

I'll listen to the scientists at Los Alamos, researchers at Y-12 and Pantex, intel weenies at Kirkland AFB, SIOP planners at Omaha, convoy commanders that I rode with, and my fellow NMCs I worked with at DOE.

I didnt say EMP is a myth....just overhyped. If a nuke designed for massive EMP (an enhanced EMP weapon) goes off above America, I'd be alot more worried about the soon to be inbound R-36MUTTH/R-36M2 and Topel-M's coming in at 18k MPH over the poles to hit our LCCs and silos in the mid-west.

With that being said.....I'm a helluva lot more worried about Marxists Presidents, communist congresscritters, complicit media, stupid "gimmie mo" voters, the flu (and antigen shifts thereof), bio weapons, diseases coming across the border, locusts, earthquakes, plagues, zombies, running out of toilet paper, my wife using my credit card, etc., than I am of TEOTWAWKI via EMP. Great for selling books, bad to dwell on.

As far as this nuclear attack I pray to God it doesn't happen, those NYers would fan out across the country.

LOL...Post of the day!...(BTW...its past 01 NOV...they are all in FL anyways!)
