Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s Crusade Against Talk Radio Shows Contempt for Voters

Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee is leading a crusade against talk radio. His latest volley is a call for advertisers and consumers to join him in a boycott.

When talk radio hosts use harshly divisive language, “The advertisers should shut them down,” [Chafee] said [Thursday] morning.

Chafee said the solution to the vitriolic rhetoric – which some have linked to the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords [last] weekend – is for people to stop paying for it, including not buying books from people who use such language(…)

Chafee made national news earlier this week when he announced that he would not go on talk radio and would ban state employees from doing so.

The ban came because talk radio is essentially “ratings-driven, for-profit programming” that was not [an] appropriate use of state employees’ time, Chafee said.

Talk radio is merely a stand in for Chafee’s true bane, his constituents who listen to it.

If someone finds the ideas of a talk radio personality attractive enough to pay $25 or so for their book, they're surely not going to be persuaded by Chafee. Rhode Island is in for four years of dumbass, job killing governance.

Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee is beneath contempt. Chafee could give lessons to Vidkun Quisling.

IIRC, Chaffee’s father was infamous for calling for the repeal of the Second Amendment at the beginning of each Senate session.

When others objected, the elder Chaffee would roar, “I came ashore at D-Day! Don’t you DARE criticize my views!”

RI has a bunch of local talk hosts on WPRO, including former Prov mayor Buddy Cianci (a Republican but also a felon;
beloved by many in that city for his accomplishments) and one local host on WHJJ (which has Rush, Beck, Hannity etc otherwise) but Chafee doesn’t want state employees to go on there. One notable exception may be in case of an emergency (huge blizzard or
something). Any friendly outlets like local NPR may be okay for him, though.

In Boston, talk stations do have some local pols on—the governor even does a monthly stint on WTKK. And for the record, Scott Brown does occasionally call in to Howie Carr
(and no doubt will do same to Michele McPhee, who is back
thanks to WRKO) and others. Kerry? Nope. I think I heard
Kerry call in to Howie ONCE many, many years ago. Pols like him know their arguments would be swiftly defeated. Brown
talks to the likes of Howie, and to listeners who call in.
Kerry? “Can we get out of here, please?,” as he said when reporters confronted him on the boat tax issue...

And the response should have been: “That's all well and good, Senator. But, whose side did you fight for, America's or the Nazis?”

Well.... I wouldn’t go quite that far, but I would have asked Chaffee the Elder just why he felt that his combat service record somehow rendered his political views as beyond criticism or disagreement.

If he had responded, “Now see here, you impudent pup!” that would have been pure gravy.

Arrogance is chief among my pet hates, BTW.
