Dubai World Down the Drain

by Tammy

January 22, 2011

I just read a great article over at Hillbuzz.

Apparently Dubai World, a man-made metropolis of islands in the Gulf of Oman, is SINKING. You may have caught the 60 Minutes interview with the King of Dubai as he explained this insane construction project. A project that was being built at the hands of slaves.

Yes, slavery survives and thrives in the Middle East. Anyone who thinks these Islamic jerks have one iota of civility in their blood is sadly mistaken.

And now these islands, built on slave blood are melting away. Karma is a bitch, isn’t it?

Go read more about it here. Kevin writes another brilliant piece about the evils of islam.

Who was/were the engineers and contractor(s)? Engineering and construction malpractice?

The sand is a great example. I remember watching on Discovery (?) how round sand was not good to fill the islands so they took it from the sea. Either way, the sea has plenty of time to try to claim it back.

A lot of very wealthy people bought homes there because it was chic. Keeping up with the Joneses. Kind of like having a Rolls in your driveway to impress your neighbors.

I imagine a lot of them were Hollywood stars and the like.

Maybe some of them are decent people, but who would buy a multimillion-dollar house in Dubai? Arab lovers? People who want to be on the front cover of People Magazine? And of course Arab Sheikhs.

I’d say on the whole this couldn’t have happened to a more deserving bunch of people.

Yup, the sand for concrete is a huge issue.

The little island country of Bahrain is nearly totally reliant upon Saudi Arabia for sand usable for making concrete to build. Just a few years ago when there was a dispute between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, Saudi just cut off Bahrain’s supply of sand for the concrete, effectively shutting down all the building going on in the country. While Bahrain’s never been trying to keep up with the Emirates, especially Dubai, a lot of growth and expansion had been happening and things just came to a grinding halt.

Too bad they never read their Bible. Don’t build on sand but build your house on a “Rock”. Mohammad is not a rock.

Didn’t they have a really disgusting sewerage back-up problem several months ago? The place was covered in it.

The Slave Markets were open till 1960 in KSA and the Barracoons were standing in the early 70’s. Slavery was supposedly abolished in KSA in 1970

Exactly.

No matter how much money they throw at something, they'll never get past their third world sh**hole mentality.

You could pretty much see this coming.

Allowing a ruling class to spend money they didn't earn never yields a favorable outcome.

Present company included.

“The foolish man builds his house on sand ...”

The most foolish man builds his house not only on sand but in a desert with no water. Sewer system alone must be fun there. I’m too lazy to look on Google earth but that area it looks flat to me

In my construction days in the ME I ran into cheap contractors who used brackish water in their concrete mix. This type of concrete was poor quality because the salt solidified when the water evaporated making the concrete brittle and it also corroded the rebar.

Of course, the damage was only noticeable a year later and the contractor had moved to another construction site.

SINKING or ERODING ??

Sinking would mean that the whole foundation is lowered

Eroding would mean a good foundation, but soil etc is washing into the sea.

Erosion could be controlled, while sinking could not

Are you talking about the big bay bridge? The Sunshine Skyway Bridge?

No,
The Sunshine Skyway goes from St.Pete to Bradenton across the mouth of Tampa Bay.
Courtney Campbell goes from Tampa near the airport over to Clearwater St. Pete airport area along with two other bridges from Tampa to St pete.

P.S.
For years the bridge was affectionately called the Courtney Crumble bridge by the locals.
