A monster Cyclone (named Cyclone Yasi) is currently heading towards the State of Queensland in Australia. Queensland is only just recovering from recent flooding across most of this huge State. This monster cyclone is similar in size and scope to Hurricane Katrina, and there are very grave fears for what might may happen when this huge System makes landfall, on early Thursday morning, in an area south of Cairns. Some areas are expecting huge sea surges, and there will be rainfall associated with the Cyclone in the vicinity of 40 inches, which will cause major flooding. Some of the imagery is stunning. I will be regularly UPDATING this Post, and linking here with those UPDATES.
Prayers up.
Prayers up. (Right idea.)
Self ping for future reference.
Does Cairns or a little north still have the gondola ride up into the jungle?
Prayers for those affected.
Cyclone Yasi will hit the north Queensland coast with greater ferocity than devastating Cyclone Larry, according to Premier Anna Bligh.
Ms Bligh, speaking after a meeting of the state disaster management group this morning, said winds of more than 250kmh could be expected from the high category four system.
By comparison Larry, which caused $1.5 billion worth of damage to Innisfail and surrounds in 2006, was a mid-level category four system.
"This of course is not only a system now tracking as more intense than Cyclone Larry, it is significantly larger than Cyclone Larry," Ms Bligh told reporters.
She said that meant areas to the north and the south of the crossing point would see effects including a high storm surge, torrential rain and destructive winds...
YIKES!
I'm too old and too decrepit to run anywhere. And thank goodness, more than a thousand miles away...
Wonder if this portends the severity of weather here this summer?
Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and I think we might have ridden that train (this was in 1996 and my dad died the next year)..
Cyclone/typhoon must be getting close.
Right now it’s 600 kilometres out to sea, travelling toward the coast at 30K per hour. Everyone very apprehensive.
