To cleanse the palate, the science fiction event of a lifetime. Alas, if only it were real. This is a fake — a slickly produced fake, to be sure, replete with clever editing and enough gags to make it a bona fide viral video phenomenon, but still a fake. I promise, though, that you’ll enjoy it anyway, either as a straightforward rendering of what an inevitably crappy “E.T.” sequel would look like or as a broader parody of Hollywood’s paint-by-numbers “evil aliens” genre. Why, there’s even an Obama cameo! Although, admittedly, that part doesn’t ring true: He sounds pretty resolute here, whereas in real life he’d issue five or six carefully worded statements designed to avoid taking any clear position on the issue. Hey, it worked in Egypt, didn’t it?

If I were writing and directing a sequel here is what I would do.
Have E.T. arrested as an illegal alien and then caught up in the bureaucratic red tape in Washington DC.
Then when E.T.’s rescuers come in their spaceships at the end of the movie, they utterly destroy Washington DC and level it with their power a la THE EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS.
ET’s back - and this time, he’s PISSED!

Like the New Yorkers who moaned before the release of “United 93”, “It’s too soon.!”
United 93 was a great movie!
So was WAITING FOR SUPERMAN!
They had me at “Defense Secretary E.Z. Reader”.
That said, it IS a cool trailer.
