Rumsfeld and O’Reilly in shootout over Iraq War. On his tour to promote his new book, “Known and Unknown,” and also defend his handling of the Iraq War, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld made an appearance on the O’Reilly Factor last night. In a wide-ranging interview that covered Afghanistan, the Secretary’s experiences, and the Iraq War, Rumsfeld did his best to defend his involvement and planning with regards to Iraq, but O’Reilly was having none of it. The Factor host essentially gave Rumsfeld hell on the issue of his apparent failure to be more forthcoming with the American public regarding the possibilities of what could go wrong in the Iraq liberation. In response, the former Secretary absorbed all of O’Reilly’s bluster and returned it in kind, only in a more cool and effortless manner.

Rumsfeld is relying on our short memories. They DID overpromise and underdeliver--wildly. The Iraq War was a complete fiasco, with no real benefit to us at all. It will go down as one of the great blunders in US history.

Afghanistan isn't looking much better, but at least that one wasn't sold to us on rubbish.

My problem with the Iraq war has nothing to do with any of the prevailing reason it has to do with our like of foresight. Iraq was the counter balance to Iran in the region. We set the domino's falling and we have no way of stopping what's going on.
Iran should have been our target.

O’Reilly took off “The Factor Gear Obama Kneepads” for that interview.

Iraq was the counter balance to Iran in the region.

That had ended after the Gulf War. Iraq was a dangerous weakling by 2003. It was capable of fomenting terrorism and, of course, we thought it had WMD. But it was no match for Iran.

It was that vacuum that was part of the decision for us to go in there.

Yes and no. Our embargo put a real crimp in their ability to upgrade their capabilities. With their oil revenues they could have rebuilt very easily, so in effect we neutered them and where there is a vacuum Iran filled it.

Huck, MY MEMORIES ARE LONG.

When you talk about short short memories, look in the mirror. Under Rumsfeld the Iraq invasion and occupation has gone very well. The trouble is YOU don’t remember, and are wildly ignorant of the history of war and comparable invasions.

Nope. I remember it very well. Once Rumsfeld was gone, things finally started to turn around over there. Even so, it was a strategic waste of time and treasure.

Rumsfeld should have stuck it out. Look, show me an invasion and occupation of a hostile nation of 50M bordering two other very hostile nations of comparable size, where the casuality count is under 250,000.

And only about $1,000,000,000,000 over budget. That’s OK. I mean, we don’t have the money, but heck, that’s what we’re here for right? To run our country into the ground so some Sunnis and Shiites halfway around the world can practice democracy. Yeah, that’s a priority.

Rummy got caught up in the anti Bush hatred mess. No different than Gonzalez.

Iraq was unintended consequences for the rats. They tried to lose the war for us by going after rummy, so rummy resigns. And then we pacify the place with the surge they wouldnt let rummy do.

If the rats didn’t once again prove they are democracy haters, we would have been out of Iraq in 2005.

The Bush Admin didn’t have to give any warning about how the war was going to go. It’s only indicative of the fact that they took their time going into Iraq that people remember what was said about how the war might turn out. Where are the quotes of Lincoln saying that 600,000 Americans would die in the Civil War?
