Utah to require teaching that US is a Republic, not a Democracy (Three cheers for Utah!)

This is a good enough reason to move to Utah, IMO. The misapplication of the word "democracy" and the resultant fetish that our political culture has with the term has frustrated me for years.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, a bill requiring Utah schools to teach that the United States is a republic and not a democracy, is being sent to the governor for his signature, after being passed in both houses of the state legislature.

I wonder how many Americans know that we’re a Republic and know the difference between a Republic and a Democracy.

My guess would be “not enough”... hopefully this is something more states will do.

“Republic” is OK, but it leaves out THE most important facet of a limit on the power of the representatives.

“Constitutional Republic” is more accurate and includes the vital limitation on government.

Well...here we are cheering something I thought was being done all along. My question: What the hell are we paying these people for if they aren’t doing their job in the first place?

That is great to hear. I do have a small challenge, the Utah Gov. has just signed into law a Guest Worker Program!!!!

It has to be approved by the FED Govt. to be placed into action.

The Local Tea Party is looking for a Person to replace the sitting Gov. I will support a replacement for Gov Herbert.

You are correct. But I would take it a step further since a Constitutional Republic is only as good as its Constitution. All the People's Republics of Whatever and even the United Nations have constitutions too. But they are meaningless statements of rights which put no limitations on the government.

Ours is unique not only in that it imposes such restrictions on the government, but provides a functioning system of checks and balances with three co-equal branches of government.

Reagan had a deep appreciation of this uniqueness and is still revered in Utah. Ex-senator Bennett didn't and is still retired.

In effect, we have been paying them to spread the progressive agenda. No one is surprised, here, right?

I am remended that a democracy is a sheep and two wolves deciding what to have for dinner. A republic is a well-armed sheep and two wolves having that same conversation.

In answer to your question; obviously not very many. It is not only socialist democrats who continually refer to “our democracy”, it is also every news person, conservative commentators, as well as conservative politicians.

It is far past the time that this simple truth be taught again and along with it people have to be taught the differences between a democracy and a republic as well as why we were established as a republic rather than a democracy.

Well, to be precise, it WAS a republic. It’s become a democracy on its way to mob rule—beginning with the extension of the franchise in the Jacksonian and following eras. It took a while after that misstep to reach democracy-stage but we are now past that and into bread and circuses mod rule.

If they also taught this sequence of developments to the kiddos, they’d be even farther ahead.

But we’ll take what we can get. Bravo Utah.

Yes, ours is unique in that it starts from the concept that the individual is the holder of all rights and only empowers the government in these enumerated ways.

The “endowed by their Creator” phrase in the Declaration and 10th amendment of the Constitution make up the “summary” of the Constitution.

Perhaps further precision is in order. We went from republic to democracy to oligarchy (1940s-1970s — rule by 9 men in black) and that’s what paved the way for mob rule which will issue in totalitarianism

unless . . . .

One may hope.

Bravo Utah.

Sad but true. I cringe whenever I hear someone say we're a Democracy. Basically:

A republic is federal states in which the administrative divisions (states or provinces) theoretically retain a degree of autonomy which is constitutionally protected, and cannot be revoked unilaterally by the national government.

I wonder how many of those media genius' know that?

The answer would be none of the nitwits who are normally held up as the “brightest” stars. Someone like a Mark Levin know this but most of the rest are ignorant.

I too want to retch when I hear someone say we’re a democracy. I would also like to see our “conservative” politicians forced to prove that they understand that the states are still supposed to retain most of the power and that they, congressmen and senators are elected to represent us and to do our collective bidding, not rule according to their personal wishes.

A lot of Democrats especially think that the United States is just one big country instead of individual states that make up the country.

Big deal. Those idiots in Utah essentially rolled out the welcome carpet for illegals with their recent legislation. In 10 years, Utah will be overrun with illegal aliens, just another LaRaza colony. Just like Texas, another state will flip blue.
