It Feels Drafty

And I believe it should be a universal draft—men and women. The new draft I envision would require one or two years of service from all young Americans. Many would probably be in the military but there might be other ways to perform required service—teaching or assisting in substandard schools where children are destined for failure without special attention, for instance. Or volunteering in crime prevention programs in high-crime areas. Spending a year or two helping to rebuild this country’s crumbling infrastructure might be a possibility.
It might be necessary to stipulate a certain number of draftees for military service. In that case, the draft would have to be a system such as the lottery during the Vietnam War.
You’re wasting your breath, so to speak, on these wimps.
Good point. Any “dirty work” that needs to be done by civilian volunteers should be done by prisoners instead.
I have not gotten a ticket or been stopped by LEO in 31 years.
That is because I drive following the rules, and I don't go are looking like a Prep IE: Tattoos and Baggie pants.
I am not worried about LEO in my daily travels.
In the modern military-technological environment 2-year enlistees are basically useless for almost every job.

I don’t think we could afford to train up draftees to the current incredible standards our troops seem to be upholding anyways.
I mean, foot patrols above 7000 ft? With 70+ lbs. of weapons, equipment and body armor? Thats not a draftee - thats a hero!
This sounds a back-door way for Obama to get his shock troops that serve the state.
Why is “giving all Americans a common experience” a good thing? My ancestors didn’t come here to join a “common experience”, they came seeking freedom to do things their own way - from worshiping God to making a living.
These ideas are always from liberal leftists who think 12 years of indoctrination isn’t enough, because too many parents counter-program their kids, and what you really need is 2 years where you’ve got them all to yourself...
good point. My point was that, for better or worse, WWII for example, gave all men of that generation something in common. Certainly, gov't indoctrination isn't the way to do it.

Serving in the military? “Listen kid, you can volunteer for the Marines, spend six months in basic training and the rest of your service in Afghanistan living in dirt, or you can volunteer for Americorps and wear a nice clean uniform and sleep every night in your own bed. The pays the same in either case, but in Americorps you'll spend eight hours a day working on a computer, going through old data in order to identify people who posted on Free Republic. When you find one we pick him up and put him in one of the hard-labor reeducation camps, and you get a nice monetary bonus. Catch five, you become an ace, and get to meet personally with President Obama and her husband, former President Obama.”

I agree. We’re not going to get the results we’re presently getting from people who don’t want to be soldiers.
And how would you like to be, for example, a nursing home resident who’s being cared for by conscript government workers? Bad as things are now in many nursing homes, they could still be a lot worse.
We’ve had involuntary military service in this country practically since the beginning.
Consider the Militia Act of 1792 which required military service of most males within a certain age range.
Consider the Federal Statute that places many within a certain age range in the unorganized militia even today.
Consider the various State statutes that place many within a certain age range in the unorganized militia even today.
Consider that the militia requirement if for decades, not just years.
Is that really what you think of our Viet Nam vets?
