You may remember the tragic story a few years ago about the chimpanzee-enthusiast who got too close to her pet chimp. The owner was known to eat all of her meals with her pet and even sleep in the same bed as the chimp, so confusion was created in his simple mind. She treated her chimp as a son, which also may have created the oedipal-chimp relationship that could lead to a great sequel to the play Equus. Anyway, apparently this bizarre relationship led to such jealously that when a friend visited, the chimp became enraged. Incredibly, the chimp tore the face off of the visiting friend, whom the chimp mistakenly took for a romantic rival. The chimp also bit off each of the fingers of his “rival”. The lesson seemed to be that as much as we may treat animals as humans, there is always a wild streak that we cannot predict. This can be dangerous.
Earlier this week a pro-Palestinian activist from Italy named Vittorio Arrigoni was kidnapped and murdered by a Salafist group in the Gaza Strip. I could explain who the Salafists are, but does it really matter?
Arrigoni had lived in Gaza among the good people as a voluntary human shield against Israeli attacks on terrorists, er . . . community activists. As a member of the terror apologist group The International Solidarity Movement (ISM), Arrigoni wanted to tell the world about the war crimes of Israel and the peaceful, gentle nature of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

I think the real issue isn’t the animal, but the fool who thinks he understands the animal. For example, if I choose to wrestle with a lion, I will probably be killed. Whose fault is it? Mine, for thinking I understood what could be done without risk. The Gazans are absolutely nuts, and a “peace activist” who lives among them is asking for death. Well, he got it.
