You might want to read the complete "Slave Narratives". There were the Simon Legrees, as in any society. . . but there were a goodly number dedicated to the good, equipping all for freedom. . . TRUE freedom not bondage in another form. Here is an example. . . to not focus on the material as solution, but to trust the Lord when you find yourself in seasons of darkness. . . . and hey, bet those principles were put to good use when your Uncle Billy and his criminals for hire, came to town to murder, rape, rob defenseless women and children, black and white, regardless of age.
