President and Mrs. Obama welcomed a big crowd to the White House for a Cinco de Mayo reception in the East Room. Hispanic politicians, Hispanic Americans serving in the Obama administration, and members of a commission on exploring the creating of a new national museum of the American Latino were among those in attendance.

"Welcome to the Cinco de Mayo at the White House," Obama told the enthusiastic crowd before promising he wouldn’t speak too long.

"Nothing ruins a good fiesta like a long speech from a politician, so I’m going to keep it short."

The first lady agreed that the president should be brief, "Keep it short," she said. The first lady wore a dark green dress that matched President Obama’s green tie.

The president called Cinco de Mayo a chance to commemorate the shared heritage between Mexicans and Americans. "It’s a day for remembering that America is a richer, stronger, more vibrant place thanks to the contributions of Mexican Americans to the life of this nation."

The crowd learned a little tidbit about the first lady, courtesy of her husband.

Said Obama: "I asked Michelle the other day, I said, ‘What’s your favorite food’ -- because we were sitting around with the girls. She said, ‘Ah, Mexican food.’"

The crowd loved the news.

"You do not want to be between Michelle and a tamale," joked the president.....

Keep your hands and feet away from her mouth and you won’t be injured.

Doesn't ring true at all. How many years have they been married, and it's just "the other day" he asks her what her favorite food is? And it turns out to be the food of today's "holiday?" Pandering, plain and simple.

When does Obama NOT pass gas? He does every time he opens his mouth, in fact.

Heh, you don’t want to be between Michelle and a gigantic triple cheesy lobstah and wagyu burrito magnifico.

He didn’t need no Seal team. Tell Michelle there is good eats in that hideout.

Thought the same. . .not a ‘lamp’; but a ‘fast’ tamale can do some damage.

In defense of Michelle, you probably don’t want to be between me and a tamale either! But not the slimy, greasy ones — I love ones that are light and somewhat fluffy in texture. Ahhh! So hard to find good ones, so worth it when you do!

I could definitely eat Mexican 2x a day...but if I did, I would probably no longer be skinny!

LOL...I knew what he meant, but...I feel it is my obligation to intentionally misunderstand him...:)

I agree it’s fun to intentionally misunderstand. He’s borderline trash talking his wife with the food thing though. Treading on dangerous territory!

I know some couples like that, who think nothing of being disrespectful to their spouse in public or to other people.

I would never dream of disparaging my spouse in front of other people the way some people do. I find it embarrassing and disturbing when they do.

I think it says a lot about them.

Now, it is true that I have a bumper sticker on my car that says “My Wife says I never listen to her. Or something like that.”

But it is a personal joke between us (as it probably would be for many married couples who have a sense of humor) and it gets a lot of laughs out of people. I can often see a car pull up behind me, and in my rear view mirror, I can see the couple craning forward to see the sticker, then break into laughter. I had a cop stop me one night for a missing tail light, and when he came up the car, he said “I like your bumper sticker...”

I didn’t get a ticket...:)

Love the bumper sticker!

When I hear someone disparage his or her spouse, it makes me think less of the one making the negative comment and never the one being trashed.

My husband and I set those ground rules early in our marriage. If we have issues with one another, it mandates a private conversation. Public digs=a kick under the table, or worse...no sex! LOL!

I can’t imagine ever talking bad about my man. He’s unbelievable. I’m very, very blessed and let everyone know it!
