Newt Gingrich’s ambition to be President of the US did not take a shot in the foot over the past weekend – it was a headshot! You can stick a fork in him ‘cause … he’s DONE!
Either Newt, or his campaign folks, grievously misread conservative voters concerning the nation’s financial mess and socialized medicine.
Two things the Gingrich campaign apparently missed: One is that Conservatives know drastic cuts in government spending must be made to salvage our country. The other is that conservatives do not like, nor do we want, socialized medicine … in any form or by any name … period!
No amount of “backing and filling” will get Newt out of this hole. He might just as well get out of the race — right now. Any chance he DID have has vanished. Kaput!
As I survey the Republican field of candidates for President today, I have to conclude the GOP has conceded the raced to Obama and the democrats.
I must tell you, I have strong suspicions the GOP does not want to have a republican in the Oval Office with the country in the financial mess it is in today. They do not want to be painted with the same brush as the current occupant — and they sure as heck do want to create a modern “Hoover Days” presidency.
As an American who believes the US is in dire need of rescuing from the clutches of the socialists in our government, I must tell you that should I confirm that is the policy of the GOP concerning this Presidential Election, I will immediately resign my membership in the Republican Party and become an Independent.

Sounds like that's what you are planning to do anyway and are just looking at a reason to bash the GOP.
So tell us, then - how does Newt's bashing of Paul Ryan somehow disparage the larger elected GOP, where all but four of the GOP House members voted for Ryan's plan?
This essay was written by a blog idiot who couldn't be bothered to think through what he was writing.
Title makes it sound like Gingrich was the only hope for the GOP.
If that is/was true, the GOP is in bigger trouble than they realize.
Gringrich comes across as an old, white-haired, McCain/Dole, that typifies the Grand OLD Party, which typifies what is wrong with the GOP.
Newt may be out, but there are plenty of good folks still in the field. There is a year to go, and plenty of miles to travel, between now and November 2012.

I find it difficult to believe Newt is this stupid, or this tone deaf. I believe there were unseen financial gains for Newt to announce and then do nothing but cause harm to conservative causes.

I don't believe it is unfixable. What the Republicans should do, IMHO, is to introduce a longer range plan, 12-15 years, that makes the necessary cuts, but doesn't put them in the untenable political position of having to run against the scare-mongering tactics of the DNC and the MSM.
In my view, all plans that alter the basic fabric of American society should be introduced over this kind of time period. I know we are bleeding currently, and need to cut spending ‘now’, and we should do that. However, the bigger fixes need to be thoughtful long-range plans that allow for reasonable societal adjustments.
The left should be painted as the party that wants to change every American’s basic way of life, overnight, with things like dramatic shifts in health care, big tax increases, increased ages for retirement and medicare, etc.. They should be painted as the party that doesn't plan for the future, and that has no respect for the sacrifices made by Americans to position themselves for the future - only to have liberal politicians pull the rug out from under them.
If a viable multi-step (with substantive early spending cuts) long-term plan is put forth, and is sold as a vision for the future, it will garner more public support, and neutralize much of the opposition.
As far as those who ‘would rather leave office’ - excellent. Then we don't have to throw them out.

It looks to me like conservative causes are alive and well. If they weren’t Newt would not be in this kind of trouble. His problems prove conservative values are clearly in the majority—at least in Republican circles.
You would have to grade on a pretty steep curve to get a result like that!
Newt was never more than a curiosity for 2012 anyway. the suggestion that the GOP swims or sinks with him is pure rubbish.
