I’m fine with cell phones. Just turn off the cable or satellite, please.

And no rims over 15”.

I think anyone who receives welfare should not be allowed to have cell phones.

There are these commercials for free government phones--the Advantage program or some such name--and these people say things like, "Now that I have my Advantage phone, I can call her doctor!" (referring to her young doctor).

Seriously? She has no regular phone or the ability to borrow a phone or go to a friend's house if she's concerned about her daughter's health? Apparently there were a lot of sick, unattended-to children before this free government phone program.

And there was a time in this country when a girl who got pregnant without a husband couldn’t just go and get on welfare.

We have so institutionalized the “baby mama” culture that there’s no turning back the clock on that. Unfortunately the cycle continues from one generation to the next. Baby mama begets baby mama, who in turn grows up to be a baby mama. And nobody is supposed to say anything, because we’re supposed to be liberal and non-judgemental and all that.

re: vacations

A lady cutting my hair the other day was telling me about the 3 vacations she’d been on that year...

It just seemed “normal” to her.

My family usually just takes driving vacations to close by attractions (because we have to subsidize others’ lifestyles).

"Do you think they shouldn’t have electricity or running water too?"

Absolutely. Move them close to a creek, they can use a wash board to wash their clothes.
If they don't have lectricity then they might go to bed earlier, then be rested the next day for wash day. Then maybe they will look for work after the wash.
I would let them have a port-a-john instead of digging them a out house. I am a compassionate conservative.

Obama’s economic win - people have to depend on HIM because he is taking away their ability to depend on themselves.

You can get seltzer chargers and supplies at liquor stores, and seltzify your tap water.

That was the original rationale for giving food stamp recipients free cell phones...”how can they get jobs if nobody can call them for an interview?”. In reality most of the minutes get used for booty calls and drug deals.

They should put Obama’s portrait on the food stamp.

Already done!

“Do you think they shouldn’t have electricity or running water too?”

Our local paper recently had a wonderful story about a young man, an immigrant from Brazil. He came here barely able to speak the language or afford an apartment. He got a job in a pizza shop and slept on the floor of the back room when the shop was closed. Made his priorities saving up money and becoming fluent in English. Saved his money and is now a US Citizen who owns a chain of sub sandwich shops. Sometimes a little adversity can be the best thing that ever happens to you.

If they don't have a cell phone, how will they get the call telling them where and when to show up for their new job?

By the way, that is the logic used in those free Welfare cell phone commercials.

It’s hard to blame the people who paid taxes for years, then got dumped on their wazoo by a collapsing economy, for saying that their turn on food stamps or SNAP is “only fair.” I’d like to know how one plans a month’s worth of meals for a person on this average of $113. Even buying from the dollar store.

A few years ago I might have agreed with that statement, but these days cel phones are dirt cheap and cheaper than having a land line. You can get a cel phone in wal-mart for 20 bucks and use it for about 25 a month. The iphones and blackberrys are a totally different animal than the run of the mill cel phone and I would agree with you if you were singling them out specfically

—the people of this country look like carnies anymore—

You’ve hit on a real sore spot of mine...absolutely beautiful young girls, 18, 20 yrs. old, who go and mutilate themselves with tattoos and multiple facial piercings. What on earth could they have been thinking?
