Why I Cannot Endorse Mitt Romney
The Pharos Project ^ | 2011-06-02 | RW Keiser

As the field of prospective Republican presidential candidates for 2012 begins to take shape, one name keeps rising to the fore: Mitt Romney. Unfortunately, Romney makes me uneasy like few other "conservatives" do.

As this is about to publish, it appears likely that Romney will officially announce his candidacy soon. Yet I cannot, will not, endorse this man, for three key reasons.

Yes, a president can refrain from endorsing abortion or committing tax payer dollars for abortion. But a president cannot repeal ROE. That was what I was driving at. Roe is law until such time a Supreme Court overturns it or we have a Constitutional amendment abolishing abortion. So I was correct that their isn't much a sitting president can do to stop abortion. Yes, a president can refrain from promoting it. Can you understand the distinction?

“the only thing the president can do about abortion is to nominate Supreme Court Justices who might overturn Roe.” Really? So the fact that Bush pushed through and passed laws curbing late-term abortions, and abolishing the monstrosity of partial-birth abortions (while Obama thinks that both are fine) is meaningless?

“There is little or nothing Romney could do as governor of Massachusetts about abortion.” There are several states (South Dakota, Minnesota, and Tennessee to name a few) who disagree strongly with you. Whether or not their anti-abortion laws weather the courts is secondary to the fact that the states are finally waking up to find strength in the 10th amendment.

“If he was vociferously pro-life, he would never have been governor in a state where the population is probably 75% or more pro-choice.” No arguments there. But the problem is that he pulled a U-turn when it was politically expedient. Not trustworthy.

“hiding a real prejudice against Mormons.” I’ve been told by liberal friends that because I oppose Obama’s policies, I’m a racist. Now I’m told that I must be anti-Mormon just because I’m deeply concerned that a known flip-flopper, a 5th generation Mormon descendant of polygamists, is entering a political climate where the definition of marriage is already eroding. I’m neither racist nor anti-Mormon, but you go on painting with broad strokes if it makes you feel superior.

“0bama points to RomneyCare as his inspiration for 0bamaCare.”

And why not? They were both written by Teddy Kennedy.

Note who is over Romney’s shoulder as he signs the “Romneycare” bill.....yep fat old Teddy.....Ever wonder why a US Senator was at a state legislation function? ‘Cause ole Ted watched as the first step in realizing his goal of National (read socialist) Healthcare was signed into law by a “republican” (ahem) governor.

What monstrosity of law in the past 30 or so years didn’t have Teddy’s fingerprints all over it? Amnesty? check! No Child Left Behind? Check! Obamacare? check! on and on....God save us from the Kennedys......

Teddeycare = Romneycare = Obamacare......all same-same.....

The breakup of the Republican Party, if it were to be permanent might be the better outcome of things. It would start as a breakup but end up as no Republican Party. That is if it is areal breakup and not just a faction running as a 3rd party.

Agreed on the anti Mormon paragraph. I can’t stand Romney. I consider him more dangerous than a re-elected Kenyan. But opposing him because he is a Mormon is absurd. His church has made its peace with the anti-polygamy mindset of the country and won’t change. Given Romney’s total malleability on issues of principle why would anyone think he would be under the sway of the Prophet of that church? Mormons seem to be the most concentrated repository of American social values and practices remaining in the country. Perhaps Mormons aren’t Christians a is frequently charged. Well, the applicable observation is “God works in mysterious ways.” Christians seem to be having a hard time retaining biblical values so God maybe sees to it that there is such a repository in spite of the slack Christians. There are lots of good reasons to oppose Romney and I can’t think of any reasons to support him. On a pro/con list there are no pros but Mormonism is not a con.
