Metaphysics of Contemporary Theft

. . . left my chainsaw in the driveway to use the restroom inside the house. Someone driving buy saw it. He slammed on the brakes, stole it, and drove off. Neat, quick, easy. Mind you there was only a 5-minute hiatus in between my cutting. And the driver was a random passer-by. That suggests to me that a high number of rural Fresno County motorists can prove to be opportunistic thieves at any given moment. The saw was new; I liked it — an off-the-shelf $400 Echo that ran well. I assume it will be sold off at a rural intersection in these parts, or the nearby swap meet for about $60. I doubt the thief was a professional woodsman who needed a tool of the trade to survive.

Someone used to post reports from “Cathy from Zimbabwe” I think, here at FR. She chronicled the demise of civilization in that country. I have a sense of the same thing when I read some of VDH’s essays.

A few years ago we had a rash of thefts of gas grill from neighbors back yards and porches.

This was when a gas grill sold for $ 6-700, {which some still do} but today you can buy a 4 burner for less than $ 200 and the thieves don't waste their time with them.

I had mine chained to a steel post but with the lower costs have since stopped that action.

We experienced our first smash and grab in Palo Alto last month. We think the thief saw our son put his book bag in the car. Unfortunately it also contained his computer. Fortunately he was interrupted by someone who also got a partial plate number and the police caught the guy. He had stolen goods with him, just not ours. We think it was a crime of opportunity. Wonder how many people out there are just waiting for us to stop paying attention so they can steal from us.....
