Biden and Conrad Reach Agreement: Raising Taxes is “Patriotic”
ATR ^ | 2011-07-22 | John Kartch

Today, during a live interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) said the following:

“Shame on you, Grover Norquist. Let's have some patriotism! Let’s have some people that come forward and say ‘We understand when you are borrowing 41 cents of every dollar, it’s time for everybody to contribute and that includes the wealthiest among us that he apparently is so beholden to for whatever reason, that he will accept no change.”

Conrad’s comments echo the Sept. 18, 2008 sentiments of then-candidate Joe Biden. As reported by the Associated Press -- “Biden calls paying higher taxes a patriotic act” -- Biden, stumping for the campaign tax increase plan, said:

“It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut.”

As noted by Samuel Johnson, appeals to false patriotism are “the last refuge of a scoundrel.”

That’s nice. I wonder what the leadership of the House, which is the only part of the federal government that has the authority to raise taxes, has to say about this?

I love how they blame this on one guy....Nordquist. These Libs still suffer from that whole “Ditto Head” meme.

Hey libs, millions upon millions of us are against taxes and find taxes anti-Patriotic. We don’t take orders from Nordquist or anyone else. He just happens to be on our side and making headway in the good fight, but heck I’d guess most people who voted in 2010 had no idea who Grover is.

Well, Ezra Klein said that because the Constitution is over 100 years old it can't be understood. Perhaps they agree with Ezra?

Biden and Conrad Reach Agreement: Raising Taxes is “Patriotic”

Patent BULLSHIT. Tell that to Jeff Immelt, chairman of GE (that paid no domestic taxes) and chairman of odumbo's council on jobs and competitiveness. Bunch of hypocrites!!!

it’s time for everybody to contribute

Hmmm...does that include the 50% of Americans that pay no taxes? Or does "everybody" include just the 50% that currently pay ALL the taxes.

"it’s time for everybody to contribute and that includes the wealthiest among us"

The top 1% pays around 40% of federal income taxes. They contribute plenty.

Well, if paying more taxes is patriotic, then how about the 47% of people WHO PAY NO TAXES get some skin in the game and start having to pay taxes like the rest of us?????? Sheesh.

I loathe Grover Norquist as much as the liberals do. He is pro-Islamic, pro-amnesty and his primary goal is to line his own pockets.

If taxes are so patriotic, then why doesn’t half the nation pay any federal income tax...?

Conrad declared he would not run for another term in 2012. So, he has nothing to lose, but his reckless behavior will guarantee that he can't change his mind.

There is no way N. Dakota will vote this assclown back in for another term.
