Michele Bachmann wins first women’s presidential straw poll (Herman Cain comes in second)

Rep. Michele Bachmann won the first Women’s Presidential Straw Poll, held at the Smart Girl Summit in St. Louis, Missouri this weekend.

Herman Cain, who spoke at the event, closely trailed Bachmann, finishing in a strong second place.

The ballot included Bachmann, Cain, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, former Ambassador Jon Huntsman, Gov. Gary Johnson, Congressman Thad McCotter, Congressman Ron Paul, Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Gov. Mitt Romney.

“The overwhelming choice of Rep. Bachmann and Herman Cain in the First Women’s Presidential Straw Poll shows that conservative women demand a true conservative – one that believes in fiscal responsibility, in limited government, and that will stand up for the grassroots,” said Stacy Mott, founder of Smart Girl Politics.

Texas Governor Rick Perry and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin were not included on the ballot.

“Attendees had a difficult time casting their vote. Many were undecided, proving that candidates must communicate better with conservative women in order to win their support. Smart Girl Politics congratulates Rep. Bachmann and looks forward to the continued support and communication of all candidates with grassroots conservative women,” added Mott.

Only women were permitted to participate in the straw poll. In addition to selecting candidates, attendees were also queried about which issues were most important to them. Reducing spending and balancing the budget was, by far, the dominant issue selected.

Andrew Breitbart also made news at the event — publicly denouncing The American Conservative Union’s (ACU) decision not to invite the gay conservative group GOProud to co-sponsor CPAC next year.

From the article:

Only women were permitted to participate in the straw poll.

Is there a straw poll where only men were permitted to participate?

Yeah, didn't think so......

For what it's worth, straw polls are generally worthless. If you don't believe me look at how many straw polls Paul and Romney won in 2007-08 compared to how many McCain won. The only exception to that rule is Ames which offers some insight into the outcome of the Iowa caucuses (the top 2 finishers are usually correct, though not necessarily in the correct order). And outside of its possible relevance to the caucuses, even the Ames straw poll doesn't offer much in the way of insight.

I’d like to find a Cain 2012 yard sign! I’d put it up this afternoon.

Cain/Bolton
Bolton/Cain

Cain is likely not up on foreign affairs. He could rely on those who are.

Use his Secretaries in Cabinet, Military (Petreaus). private sector foreign
expertise. Ambassadors. etc.

AND NO MORE TSARS!!

EVERYONE MUST BE VETTED - I THINK CAIN IS A QUICK STUDY BUT HE HAS TO GET THERE =TV/RADIO/SPEECHES/VISIT TROOPS AND LAUD THEM FOR THEIR FIGHT/VISIT FREINLY COUNTRIES TO MEET AND GREAT/KISS A BABY IF THAT IS WHAT IT WOULD TAKE HIM TO POTUS.

Palin KADs are funny. If Palin (or Perry for that matter) wants to be considered then she needs to declare. Enough of this dipping her toe in the water and then her supporters complaining when she (still undeclared) isn’t included in polls/ballots. It’s as if her supporters feel she deserves a different set of rules, i.e. a coronation to the nomination.

Because some want a coronation for Palin. But Perry pisses me off just as much. If you’re going to run then run otherwise shut up about it.

You are well aware that Sarah Palin publicly declared (Hannity TV show 7/13/11) that she would announce her decision in the Aug/Sept time frame. Can you hold on that long? I can.

That’s my view. The sooner we know who is in, the sooner we can start comparing them to each other. It is a waste of time and effort to support someone who may or may not run.

Remember Fred Thompson? How so many were excited about him, pushing him to run, but when he did decide, his heart wasn’t in it, you could tell.

Cain is likely not up on foreign affairs. He could rely on those who are.

That is the sign of a true leader and Cain has said this many times, he would surround himself with knowledgeable individuals, listen to their advice and make a decision. Working so many years in a corporate environment, that's how things are done. You listen to the pros, you listen to the cons and you make a decision. No one person can know everything about everything. Micromanagers don't do well in the corporate environment.

It saddens me to see that people expect Palin or Cain to know all the answers. One must look at all the facts and make the best decision.

Sometimes that answer is not off the cuff, most times you have to do some research to make good decisions.

I had fun this weekend at Westfair (Pottawatamie County, Iowa). O4P was out in force and was the ONLY candidate to have a table at the event. Herman Cain visited Saturday and passed by out booth. I shook his hand and plesantries were exchanged (he was classy). One of his staffer’s had a non-verbal reaction to our table (it was quite revealing). It was like, “My gosh, these O4P are EVERYWHERE!!!”

We passed out quite a few fliers for the BIG Sept 3rd Tea Party event (just west of Des Moines). We got a couple of people to sign up for O4P. I can summize that the Palin base in Iowa is strong, organic, and quite active.

There were some Ron Paul people (and a Perry rep) at the event but they stayed in the Pottawatamie GOP booth.

There was a DNC table at the event. It looked dead and they didn’t even show up for the final day.
