ZZ Top: Jesus Just Left Chicago (Live 2010)

"I'm talkin' about The Hero, now..."

From Eric Clapton's 'Crossroads 2010' last year- it don't get any better than this...

After opening for such major bands as Humble Pie and Janis Joplin when they played Texas, ZZ Top were making themselves known. 1973's Tres Hombres completed the task when it went all the way to #8 on the Billboard Album chart. The record featured the single "La Grange", which of course went on to be a concert staple that has played on FM radio forever (although the first time I heard it was on AM radio when I was eleven!).

In January 1973 ZZ Top was asked by Mick Jagger to fly out to Hawaii and open for the Rolling Stones at upcoming Honolulu shows- almost thirty years and millions of albums later, they sound better than ever...

Are you telling me that the guys are Republicans? Billy loves, and uses, amps built by my friend Mike Zaite, Dr. Z. I have two, and you can’t do better!

I went to one of their concerts a few months back. My 21 year old son went with me. They were there with Skynyrd.

I think the concert as a whole was a little on the tame side for my son, but we both enjoyed it. ZZ Top still puts on a great show.

Been a fan since the first time I heard ‘em. Always impressed me how they could do so much with so little - only 3 players, a handful of chords, and a spareness of riffs.

They’ve had a habit of making up for it in attitude ;-)

I like Tres Hombres but Rio Grande Mud has to be my all time favorite album by ZZT. I'd probably not recognize him but Beard lives on an appropriately named ranch several miles down the road. Thanks for the music!

Yep... that, talent, and personality mixed with a sense of humor sorely lacking in today's self absorbed nothings that rule the charts

I say ZZ Top in 79 and 83, and “Rossington Collins” the year after the plane crash... and that was more Skynyrd than the current band

For a finale, they played Free Bird as an instrumental, with a lone spotlight on Ronnie VZ’s abandoned mike... touching

Gimme Three Steps still one of the best songs I’ve ever heard... and All-American as it gets

You are more than welcome, those who don’t check out the early albums are truly missing out on something

I’ve loved ZZ Top since the Tres Hombres album when I first heard them. Saw them in concert in 76 at a bicentennial stadium extravaganza in Memphis. Opener was Blue Oyster Cult followed by The Outlaws, next up was Lynryd Skynryd (before the plane crash).

I told my buddy that ZZ Top should not have headlined against those bands and their many guitar slingers. I figured they would be OK but that a 3 piece couldn’t generate enough excitement after what we had just watched. Particularly Skynryd ending with Free Bird. Wrong, wrong and wrong again. That “little ole band from Texas” came out and just plainly and simply kicked butt and took names.

This is when they would come out of “Jailhouse Rock” and do the “Back Door Love Affair Medley” with Dusty and Billy throwing barbs at each other...”he thinks he’s real bad but they don’t call me the Texas home wrecker and heart breaker for nothing.” Quite honestly I think the Stones should warm up for ZZ Top.

“My Papa leaned toward Moma and said Let that boy boogie woogie. It’s in ‘im and it’s got to come out.” As Billy would say; “It’s the same three guys and the same three chords.” Boogie Woogie boys and never ever stop.

Saw ZZ Top at the County Fairgrounds in Tampa, FL in July 1975.

The were second billed to Johnny Winter.

Also on the program: Marshall Tucker, War, Wet Willie, Atlanta Rhythm Section and this odd band named KISS

My nephew ran into Billy Gibbons in a bar in Nashville several years ago, said what appears on stage seems to be what he is in real life.

Said he was a nice guy who enjoyed talking to fans with no pretense about him. Dressed about the same way as he appears on stage, LOL.

Ever see/hear the Joe Bonamassa cover of Just Got Paid? It's pretty awesome - and it has a little Zeppelin thrown in as well.

Sorry - just using using your thread for a great band (ZZ Top) for a shameless plug of my latest & greatest guitar hero :), who I hadn't even heard of until a few months ago.

Dr. Zs are great amps, I wish I could afford one, will just settle for my Reverend Hellhound. “Blue Jean Blues” is great as well.
