ZZ Top: Jesus Just Left Chicago (Live 2010)
Reaganite Republican ^ | August 6, 2011 | Reaganite Republican

"I'm talkin' about The Hero, now..."

From Eric Clapton's 'Crossroads 2010' last year- it don't get any better than this...

After opening for such major bands as Humble Pie and Janis Joplin when they played Texas, ZZ Top were making themselves known. 1973's Tres Hombres completed the task when it went all the way to #8 on the Billboard Album chart. The record featured the single "La Grange", which of course went on to be a concert staple that has played on FM radio forever (although the first time I heard it was on AM radio when I was eleven!).

In January 1973 ZZ Top was asked by Mick Jagger to fly out to Hawaii and open for the Rolling Stones at upcoming Honolulu shows- almost thirty years and millions of albums later, they sound better than ever...

“Now is that a real 57 strat you have or a reissue?”

The real thing. I traded a ‘58 Bassman to get it. It’s San Marino Blue, the same color as Caddy Eldorado ‘57 convertibles of the same year. An amazing guitar!

Joe is the real deal. Saw him twice this year. Never ceases to amaze. Love me some Rev Willie G also. Time to Jam.

I’ve seen them in 3 different decades. Always a good show.

Saw the band in 1973 just as “Tres Hombres” was released. Ticket price was a blistering $1.25. Awsome.

>>...Ever see/hear the Joe Bonamassa cover of Just Got Paid?...<<

Meh... He just does not have the voice for blues-rock. Dude can wear-out a guitar (and I respect that!), but his voice seems more suited to Christopher Cross covers.

Saw them in Jacksonville in ‘73. They opened for Deep Purple. Then at the Tulsa Speeedway later. They were the headliner and came on after Brownsville Station and Blue Oyster Cult. My favorite song from Tres Hombres is “Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers”.

Sweet sounding amps based on the video’s at the web site. Bit pricey, IMO. Will stick with my Delta Blues. :)

“Bit pricey, IMO.”

Not really. Do some comparison to companies like Victoria. I got a Delta Blues 15” for my baritone guitars. But it was weak on the low end. Small transformers, but that was part of the “Swampy” design, and they worked well for that sound. I installed a huge Hammond power transformer, and a Dr. Z output transformer. Really did wonders for the amp! But I play very clean, sound-wise. I used it for pedal steel on Neil Zaza’s “Staring at The Sun” cd.

I have a 15” and a 2x10” Delta Blues & honestly haven’t looked at another amp since I’ve had them (5-6 years). I can get great tone at any volume, dirty or clean. The 2x10 combo does have more punch at the low & mid range & for big rooms that’s my preferred amp.

For all my studio work I use Native Instrument’s Guitar Rig Pro, A couple of the rigs in Logic Pro 9 & a couple from POD FARM via usb controller.

It’s prolly true the Dr Z’s seem pricey to me since I haven’t looked at another amp seriously in a while, lol. Perhaps after getting some health issues squared away I might look to gig again & consider the DR Z’s again.

Rock steady :)

Name me one band that has gone 40+ years with NO personnel changes, other than ZZ Top.

“Rock steady :)”

Abdo-lutely!
As I mentioned, the DBs are really nice Swampy amps, but it just fell apart trying to deal with the lows of a baritone, and that’s what I got it for. Trade with Zaza. Check out his youtubes. With the bigger, and better, transformers, it works great for me. I was surprised at how the pedal steel sounded using it. Pedal steel pickups put out between 18 and 22K ohms of power. Some amps just can’t handle that input to the first stage of the preamp. And pedal steelers usually use amps in the 250 watt+ power size. I personally like my old Twin for steel.

We've lost alot of our Southern Rock legends over the years but glad to see the boys from Texas are still rocking the house.

Question. Do their amps go up to 11 or 12? :)
