Bible message on sodomy censored in Brazil

By Julio Severo

Brazil is the land of the provocative women, which are shown even in billboards, with no censorship. But billboards with Bible messages were removed last Saturday, by order from judiciary officials in the city of Ribeirão Preto, in the state of São Paulo.

The billboards, sponsored by House of Pray Christian Church, said,

“If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination.” (Leviticus 20:13 ESV)

“For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.” (Romans 1:26-27 ESV)

“Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out,” (Acts 3:19 ESV)

Allegedly, the messages were removed because on Sunday the gay parade would happen and its organizers were offended by the Bible verses in the billboards.

Yet, in the gay parade in the São Paulo city, Catholics saints were portrayed in indecent positions, and its slogan was a Bible passage, “Love one another,” that has no relation with homosexual sex. Catholics and other Christians were offended by the gay misrepresentation of Catholic saints and the Bible, but judiciary officials took no action against those that made such abuses.

In his decision against the Bible billboards, Judge Aleksander Coronado Braido da Silva declared that “the Federal Constitution protects the behavior of the defendant (House of Prayer of Ribeirão Preto) of expressing its personal views, but, at the same time, it also protects the intimacy, honor and image of people when they are dishonored”.

Mostly Catholic Ribeirão Preto has a population of about 500,000. According to the latest census, there are just 500 gay couples living in the city. But gay groups say that homosexuals are 20% of the local population, a number two times higher than the 10% used by the fraudulent research of Alfred Kinsey. Honest research today appoints no more than 2% of homosexuals in the general population.

According to Jornal A Cidade, a local online newspaper of Ribeirão Preto, just 5,000 people took part in the local gay parade, an event openly offensive in Brazil, with gay sex acts, drugs, violence and drunkenness. But this minority is entitled to offend the general population, with deceptions and depravity, and is entitled to get official protection from “offensive” messages containing nothing else than truth.

Notwithstanding the Bible messages removed, local gay militants said that they dislike censorship. “People may even voice their views, provided they do not offend the gay movement”, said Fábio de Jesus Silva, president of the gay NGO Arco-íris.

Yet, House of Prayer did not express its own views. They just put on billboards statements contained originally in Bible. And they were censored, for the sake of gay sensibilities.

How not to offend them?

If you cannot criticize their behavior, you are left only with the right to remain silent or affirm their lifestyle. This is just what the Anglican Church in Ribeirão Preto did: it participated in the gay parade.

Local Anglican archbishop Ricardo Lorite de Lima said that his church was available to make religious ceremonies of same-sex “marriage”. “Our church has the stance of embracing everybody, because they are children of God, with no discrimination. If some couple is interested in receiving a blessing, they just should come to us”, he said.

“In 2008, we pass a resolution where we accept the ordination of homosexuals”, the Anglican leader said, also criticizing the Bible message on the billboards of Ribeirão Preto: “There are several Bible passages that are translated out of the context, and today there is a Bible reinterpretation called inclusive. We have several theologians with different and updated views of the Bible”.

In interview with Julio Severo, Rev. Antonio Hernandez Lopes, of House of Prayer, said that he will pursue legal action to restore the Bible messages on the billboards. His view is that in a free society the church should be free to denounce any sin. In fact, churches traditionally denounce adultery, fornication, drug and alcohol abuse and other sins, and no church has ever been accused of inciting hate and violence against adulterers, fornicators, drug and alcohol addicts, etc.

Apparently, homosexuality has been singled out by the world powers for special protection and privileges, banning the right, religious and otherwise, to denounce it.

Rev. Lopes challenges churches to be prayerfully united against these world powers, which want to impose a “sacred” status for sodomy on society and church.

If the House of Pray Christian Church wanted to really be provocative, they could have quoted another scripture in Leviticus which proscribes the proper method to deal with homosexual acts.

I'm sure this plays a role in why Brazil was selected.

This is part of a bigger picture. Deviant sexual behavior was openly practiced during pagan times. And today we’re reverting back to those times. Paganism/socialism means no longer bowing to Christianity and its morally which reinforces traditional values, marriage and the family. Socialism in particular wants atheism — where citizen loyalties and all authority flow to and from the state — and where the family or church are weakened or no longer exist. This was seen coming for some time and now its only a question of whether our culture can withstand the pagan onslaught. There is a dark period ahead masking as liberation — liberation from Capitalism, Christianity and all traditional values — and hopefully this pagan pendulum can be stopped and made to swing the other way.

Leviticus 20:13 WAS quoted - they just left off the tail end.

“they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them.”

The phrase ‘their blood is upon them’ means “they brought it upon themselves”.

“they shall be put to death,” And therein lies the problem with literal interpretation of, and action upon, the bible. There are a number of other equally extreme “rules” My husband spent 3 months working in Brazil. He said attitudes toward sex were very uninhibited.

Yeah. I can see that too. In our Armed Froces.

For example... What with Zerobama leading the way for queers in the military, it won’t be long before our Chaplains are prohibited from speaking Biblical truths when it comes to homosexuality and sodomy. They will be told to either cenosr the Bible or resign their commission.

Well yes, that is why it is a good thing we live in a Constitutional Republic founded on the concept of religious liberty - rather than a theocracy.

According to Leviticus I should be exiled from the people.

I aint!

So ... what?

Do you think that the Bible is wrong because some Brazilians will bugger anything that moves?

Perhaps you'd like to do away with those extreme "rules" about theft and murder?

The "Gay Christian" movement (Link), which is huge in the USA, and making rapid inroads in Evangelical seminaries (Link), claims that they can be both Bible-believing and yet pro-gay-sex on the grounds that the key passages cited against gays refer only to a very narrow category of gay sex acts (specifically, violent rape, pagan temple prostitution, and pedophilia) and that interpretations which claim a broader prohibition of ALL gay sex, are faulty translations.

I see this as bunk, but my argument would be strongly bolstered by Natural Law and by the 2,000 year exceptionless norms taught by historic Christianity (Orthodox and Catholic).

Honest question: how do you fight a translation controversy like this, on the basis of "Bible alone," when the "Bible alone" does not contain a lexicon which indicates how broadly or narrowly Greek terms like arsenokoites and malakos are to be understood?

Part of the problem (as I pointed out here at #14) is that

Thus they lack all persuasive force when they point to Scripture verses alone. They play right into the hands of the seminary prof who tells Mr. and Ms. pastor-to-be "Well, we Evangelicals now know that these passages, correctly interpreted, are perfectly supportive of loving and sincere gay relationships and blah-blah-blah."

So well-intending onlookers are stuck with either Scriptures so loosey-goosey and so conformed to modern prejudices that they might as well all join the Episcopalian LGBT Love-One-Another Hospitality Committee; or Scriptures so ferocious and so opaquely non-explanatory that they might as well all join the Taliban.

Anybody here see what I mean?

As I was reading this article, I think an earthquake just hit in West Virginia a few minutes ago...

Usually so small we don’t really notice them. This shook my house and rocked my rocker recliner...neighbors all felt it too.

Figure it’s an earthquake or a mine explosion somewhere???

So you feel that execution for adult consensual homosexual behavior and adultery are not extreme? You favor Sharia law?

Do not attempt to "put word in my mouth".

If you want to know what I think, ask. Politely. Your failure to answer my questions is noted.

Piss off.
