A Short History of Democrats, Republicans, and Racism

The following are a few basic historical facts that every American should know.

Fact: The Republican Party was founded primarily to abolish slavery. The Democratic Party fought them fiercely and tried to maintain slavery.

Why is this fact so rarely mentioned? PBS documentaries about slavery and the Civil War barely mention it, for example. Is it not historically relevant? Or does the liberal media perhaps think it will confuse the public? I have a funny feeling that if the positions of the parties had been the opposite, and the Democrats had fought the Republicans to end slavery, the historical party roles would be repeated incessantly in these documentaries. Funny how that works.

A recent discussion I had with a liberal friend prompted me to write this. You might find it helpful for your liberal friends. People need to learn basic history.

The Republican Party was founded primarily to abolish slavery.

That is an overstatement. The Republicans wanted to stop the expansion of slavery into the territories and limit the expansion of the slave plantation system. The Republicans were not abolitionist before the Civil War.

The early Republican slogan was: "Free soil, Free labor, Free men," indicating opposition to slavery and the plantation system.

Thanks for the feedback.

I suppose I could change it to something like this:

The Republican Party was founded primarily to oppose the expansion of slavery, and it eventually abolished slavery. The Democratic Party fought them fiercely and tried to maintain and expand slavery.

What do you think about that?

Also, what did you think about the historical accuracy of the rest of the article?

I just read another interesting thing about the democrats, the unions, and the Republicans. It pertained to social security. A moderate Republican from the Insurance Industry was an instigator, and the unions were dead set against it. They dropped their opposition, when flexibility to have their own pensions was added to the bill.

Yep that’s right those mean old Republicans who are accused of wanting grandma to starve. I was amazed.

“The Democratic Party fought them fiercely and tried to maintain slavery.

Why is this fact so rarely mentioned?”

I know the answer, teacher. Because the Democrats hi-jacked the narrative. Everybody believes the newspapers and nightly news.

Just wondering if anyone read the entire article. I thought some Freepers might appreciate how I laid out the historical basics that surprisingly few seem to know, particularly liberals.

I am sick to death of hearing liberals claim that the parties “switched,” and all the racist Democrats became Republicans! If that myth can be debunked, it will help Republicans tremendously.
