Despite hysterical headlines of an “historic” storm: Irene is a Category 1 Hurricane

cross post from IfLizWereQueen The Truth of Irene’s Strength? –not nearly that of her related headlines for the past two days from the US media.
Here is the latest report from the National Hurricane Center as of 6:03 AM Central Time and the hurricane still has not made landfall on the US shores.
*Note: A Category 1 is the lowest category on the Saffir-Simpson scale before a storm is classified as a tropical storm.
I guess they’ll have to dream up another distraction to keep our minds off the jobs that they are not creating, the Keystone Pipeline, and other real issues as these headlines have now proven themselves to be what they are: Hyperboles of the first degree. [On the plus side maybe this is their idea of stimulating the economy as no doubt millions of people went out and purchased items they might not have otherwise bought--water, flashlights, motel rooms inland, etc. Of course this may not have been on the plus side for many of these people as they might not have been able to afford these purchases.]
But the problem and danger with this type of exaggerated and irresponsible reporting is the same as that of the little boy who cried wolf. Maybe next time it really will be a Category 3 hurricane and thousands of people will not heed the warnings.

This is not like it is the first time that the public have been grossly mislead by false impending apocalyptic warnings from the main stream media. Only a few months ago they were predicting that major portions of the West Coast were going to be consumed by a tsumini, resulting from the Japanese earthquake.

Agnes obliterated parts of Northeast PA. We've had record rain in August in Southeast Pa before this storm. I hope this thing is overrated.
Not to sound unsympathetic but it was a fallen tree branch. If you get taken out by a fallen tree branch, I have to go with “it was just your time”.
Yeah I guess the fact that a person died is insignificant cuz it was just a fallen tree branch that kille dhim, oh well, no biggie, just his time to go.
An 11 year old VA boy was killed today when a tree slammed into his home, yeah, no biggie, it was just his time to go. Hurricanes are no big deal, nothing to see here.
Seven dead now due to the “hyped” up storm, no biggie, it was just their time to go. We shouldn’t take the storm seriously, it’s only a category one, hyped up by the media.
Wake me up when 320 tornadoes hit your state at once as happened in the south this year.
I kind of wonder if more people die on a normal weekend in the Irene affected areas when everybody is out and about than will die this weekend because not many people are driving? I mean Katrina had a death toll of around 2,000 so it was very dangerous but if the toll stays down like it is now it may turn out to be a betetr than average weekend, mortality wise.

Hurricane hyperbole never goes out of style

On one 24-hour news channel, a correspondent described the calm before hurricane Irene as the calm before a B-movie zombie attack. One anchor proclaimed the storm to be “as big as Europe.” Elsewhere, the hurricane was touted as the storm of a lifetime.
Storm hype is of course nothing new, neither is saying overwrought things when trying to fill up hours of airtime.
But as the hurricane approached, the fever pitch of the Irene coverage took on a life of its own, with government officials leading a chorus of caution even as closer watchers of the weather, especially on the ground in North Carolina, grew increasingly convinced that Irene would not strengthen, but steadily weaken instead into something closer to a massive tropical storm.
On one network, “they are desperately trying to [show] a nail, a shingle, anything. It’s getting embarrassing,” one Internet commenter said as Irene’s core made landfall with 74 mile-per-hour ground speed readings in many locations near its eye – right on the line between a tropical storm and a hurricane. Days earlier, forecasters believed a catastrophic Category 4 storm was a distinct possibility.

Don’t make lite of something you are not seeing for yourself. Transformers are exploding, power lines are down, trees down, sirens all over town, you may think it’s a walk in the park but for those of us sitting in the middle of it it’s not a joke.

I do not wish to disparage the storm here. I love VA Beach and Hatteras, especially Okracoke. Baltimore’s cool. The others I don’t know well anymore, mostly because I don’t want to. Well, except for DC/Alexandria and the Beltway. I suppose that’s actually a lot of places.
What I do mind is the hysterics. Where were national networks lined up like flights coming into Reagan 1) at Minot; 2) at the levess and dams that broke/were allowed to break along the upper Missouri; 3) in LA days and days after the midwestern floods; 4) in and around the tornados from OK to TN earlier this year; 5) when the ice storm of a couple of years ago left people from WV west in the dark for weeks; 6) in the land made dry by CA regs to ‘save’ a smelt (rather than farm them), thus destroying family farms, 100-year old nut trees, and causing at least 18% unemployment; 7) after the hurricane of last year in TX/Galveston; 8) all over the AZ wildfire like white on rice; and, finally 9) in the CURRENT drought catastrophe in Texas/Oklahoma? Wait a minute. Are most of these states red states? And this means wall-to-wall coverage and heave ho ‘let’s get ‘er done’ help is not worth a dime?
I am furious about this flicking away of the rest of the country so that 0bama ‘can take control’ of Irene. To me, this demonstrates the complete selfishness of East Coast media. Meanwhile, 1) AQ in Iraq has launched scuds into Kuwait; 2) more people have been killed in Iraq (it’s safe now); 3) Egypt is hiring the bedouin to fight AQ in Egypt; 4) Black Africans are being slaughtered in Libya; 5) the #2 AQ guy in Pakistan is now dead, thanks to us; 6) Zero’s EOs give race-based hiring a thumbs up—attempting to make minorities in control of the federal gov’t; 7) The S&P head ‘has resigned’ courtesy of this fascist totalitarian sh!t Administration; 8) Zero’s buddy Mugabe may have Qaddafi; 9) Mexican military’s in the US ‘fighting the cartels;’ and 10) Zero’s approval’s tanking like the Titanic, along with our economy. But hey, Irene’s worthy of legions of newscasters standing in sewage foam and reporting on missing shingles, some flooding, and NC excepted, the worst thing to happen in decades—complete with FEMA personnel moved into local motels, playing cards while waiting to help clean things up, at our expense, of course.
All to boost 0bama’s ratings and attempt to compare a 200+ MPH cat5 hurricane under Bush, complete with DNC complicity and Blanco’s/Nagin’s dereliction of duty to their citizens, complete with ‘collateral damage deaths’ in an effort to trash Bush. Irene is no Katrina. Never was. But it’s worthy of a 3D cone of 1) complicit federally controlled media; 2) ‘assistance’ upcoming (no doubt, a ‘jobs’ effort to ‘rebuild’); and 3) maybe we’ll even see 1930s-style work camps and cook food over campfires communally, so’s the Hamptons and LI residents can recoup their former ‘lifestyle.’ (Sorry. That’s a bit over the top, classist perspective of mine on those with especially inherited wealth).
As to the other things mentioned above, let’s give that a mere mote in our East coast eye. The ‘teabaggers’ being the illiterates they are will never notice. After all, we’re hicks and all related to each other via 2nd if not 1st cousins. And we can see Russia from our houses, even if they’re in Arkansas.
I forgot to mention that PR’s El Morro is downright amazing, along with the hunt for the elusive coqui, and the Bahamas are worth sighing over in pure delight.

Quite frankly I don’t care what you or savage or anyone else has to say about this storm, neither of you were sitting where I was sitting. Neither of you had transformers exploding in your neighborhood, neither of you have roof damage, tree damage, property damage, power lines down, flooding, etc. etc. the list is endless and I’m tired of people telling me how hyped the storm was and how weakened it was and what a farce it was etc etc I really don’t care, please stop with the links, I’m not interested.
