Gibson Competitor is Dem Donor;Uses Same Wood, ExperiencedNo Federal Raids
Big Hollywood ^ | 8/26/11 | John Nolte

Via Andrew Lawton at Landmark Report: One of Gibson’s leading competitors is C.F. Martin & Company. The C.E.O., Chris Martin IV, is a long-time Democratic supporter, with $35,400 in contributions to Democratic candidates and the DNC over the past couple of elections (though, to be fair, he did donate a whopping $750 to Republican Congressmen in the 90s.) According to C.F. Martin’s catalog, several of their guitars contain ''East Indian Rosewood.' In case you were wondering, that is the exact same wood in at least ten of Gibson’s guitars. If true, it adds another piece to an increasingly disturbing puzzle.

No puzzle, just Chicagoland shakedown and politics.

Does this mean I have to turn in my Les Paul or risk having Customs bust my door down?

It means you ought to be real careful about bringing it out of the country.

Dear new media Bloggers, please stop this error in your reporting>

C.F. Martin is Not a competitor - leading or otherwise - of Gibson Guitars, honest. Really. Do some fact checking.

C.F. Martin makes Acoustic Guitars, exclusively, and darn good ones. Gibson makes *mostly* Electric Guitars, and darn good ones.

The real "leading competitor" to Gibson Guitar and their Les Paul and 'SG' models is Fender Guitar Co and their Electric Guitars like the Stratocaster and Telecaster models. Gibson also makes great semi-hollow body electrics like the ES-335 'dot', and BB King's ES-345 'Lucille'.

I'm not saying Gibson is NOT unfairly being singled out by the G, while Martin is getting a pass for using the same exotic woods. But please Blogger guys, stop with the 'leading competitor' stuff. Okay?

an aside;
Many famous 'Rock Guitar gods' like Eric Clapton start out playing a Gibson Les Paul. But then later switch to the Fender 'Strat' for the different sound it makes a from the Les Paul. Every guitar has its own sound, something my wife 'can't get' and wonders why I need Six Guitars. (actually Five. I have a Takamine acoustic I haven't touched for yeeears and want to sell)

This outrage is a just the thuggish continuation of this Administration's ongoing legal, personal and economic attack on it's political enemies.

Remember when the feds took over GM and Chrysler and the new Auto Czar took his little list and shut down thousands of dealerships around the country and surprise? surprise?, yep, 99.5% of them were GOP donors?

The same thing is at work here except on a smaller scale.

Uncle Joe Stalin would be proud of the Obama Administration. Proud! The only thing missing is sending political opponents off to the gulags and who knows how far behind that is at this point? From the sounds of it, not far. The DOJ is behind this trumped up outrage and everybody knows who is the prosecutor for the federal prison system!

I remember a college roommate who played a Yamaha 12 string. He finally saved enough to buy a Martin 12 string. What an amazing difference.

No, you can pay a fine and get grandfathered in. Make your check out for $2,000 and submit it to "Democratic National Committee, Washington, DC...."

US gov’t resources being used on behalf of Indian law?

No, that's actually their position. Committing an act that is against the law of another country is a US crime! Bizarre. Makes a mockery of the whole concept of jurisdiction. What if Uzbekistan outlaws Islam? Or tyranny, for that matter? Are they gonna go arrest The Won?

The DOJ should just cut the BS and cite Gibson for their REAL “crime”-—Failure to contribute to the DNC.

There’s a grain of truth to that, though I don’t know of anyone who has been able to prove he has duplicated the finish of these famous violins.

However, it’s not uncommon to find that when a newly built, unfinished violin is tested before finishing, the tester reports it sounds better than the typical finished violin.

Just get a tele and call it a day.

Nah, if anyone's looking for an alternative to a Les Paul, they should look at Yamaha's SG(SBG)2000. Amazing, amazing guitar, and I finally got my hands on one of the reissues several years ago.

I've traded many guitars over the years, including great Gibson LPs and SGs, but I would NEVER let go of the Yamaha.

All the best to Gibson, though, and I hope they kick the Obama DOJ's arse in court.
