And that absolutely should not be allowed. I wish we had a candidate up there who was strong enough to say that.
Texas did pass the Voter ID bill, though, over the protests of whining minorities. We have to show a picture ID at the polls now and I'm quite OK with that.
For Those Of You Who Believe What You Hear Without Checking Your Facts: Governor Rick Perry Doesn’t Spport Illegal Aliens-—> “To Qualify For The Texas In-State Tuition Rate They Have To Turn Themselves Into Immigration Officials And Be In The Process Of Acquiring Citizenship. It Is Exactly Like US Military Service= If You Aren’t A US Citizen You Can Still Serve As Long As You Are In The Process Of Acquiring Citizenship.”
And it took Texas SIX years to get that through and to Gov. Perry's desk to sign. Very few states have PHOTO voter ID required by law that Texas now has. Obama's Attorney General Erick Holder is "looking it over" and will no doubt be challenging it.
Perry is going to be in for a big surprise in the FL and SC primaries. His remarks on immigration will hurt him badly. In fact SC has a law specifically prohibiting illegal immigrants from receiving in-state tuition as does GA, AZ, and CO. We are working on one here in VA.
In state tuition is even a big issue in one of the bluest of blue states, MD, which passed in-state tuition for illegals this Summer. The outcry was so great that a petition movement to put the issue on the ballot succeeded. They got twice the number of signatures required and did so in record time. People were begging to sign it. The law has been suspended pending the outcome of the referendum. The ACLU and La Raza are trying to undo the petition through a court challenge. They know that, like gay marriage, putting the issue to the people will kill it. Perry has made a major blunder.
I was leaning toward Perry until last night. He really lost me with his immigration remarks. I am not going to be able to get past it and I think it put off a lot of folks. I don’t want to face that amnesty fight again that Bush put us through.
***If the schools knowingly harbor an illegal, they need to be treated like a company who hires an illegal! FINE THEM, send the kids and their illegal parents back to their own country for an education.***
But Perry won’t even crack down on and fine the *businesses* that employ illegals. He won’t crack down on Sanctuary Cities. He won’t do crap.
He whines. He whines that Obama isn’t doing enough when there is PLENTY that Texas herself could do to address this problem. Instead, he implements a program that’s going to only ENCOURAGE illegals to stay and cost money.
When Jan Brewer came out swinging, the contrast was laid bare. Here was a state legislature and governor who were serious about addressing the problem.
And Perry just looked vaguely uncomfortable with Arizona’s actions and said that he didn’t think that this would be a good idea for Texas.
I agree with Perry that this is the responsibility of the Federal Government; however, when the FG doesn’t step up, it is the responsibility of the individual states to defend themselves.
I can understand him agreeing with the policy, and appreciate that he is not trying to doubletalk his support of it, but he didn't set it.
FWIW, I agree with your position on the policy.

It sounds like Perry has illegals under pretty good control. As long as the Feds are worthless, and any state that tries to seriously stop illegals is punished, I think the other states should follow Perrys lead. He's doing more than anyone else I've heard about.
Good job Perry! Too bad all this couldn't come out in the debates.
Wow!! you still with this guy after last night?
Nothing. It's a legally meaningless sound bite the Perry fans have latched on to.
Fighting a deportation order could be considered "working towards citizenship".

Analysts: Romney Overpowers Perry in Spirited GOP Debate

Texas Gov. Rick Perry seemed to lose steam again Thursday night under withering criticism from his GOP debate rivals — especially former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who battered him again over Social Security and illegal immigration.
If you don't mind, and if you know, could you summarize what "working toward US citizenship" consists of?
Somehow the morons in government cannot figure out that subsidizing a behavior results in more of that behavior.
I did and do not support the KS version of this excrement law, either.
Sometimes I wonder if Shakespeare didn’t have a valid point. (First... the lawyers.)
Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania piled on the criticism and called Mr. Perry “soft on illegal immigration” and alluded to a Perry speech from 2001 at which the Texan extolled the virtue of studying a “binational health insurance” program between border areas of Texas and Mexico.
“I don’t even think Barack Obama would be for binational health insurance,” the former Pennsylvania Senator quipped, sparking laughter from the audience. “So I think he’s very weak on this issue of American sovereignty and protecting our borders and not being a magnet for illegal immigration.”
I've checked my facts. And what you outline is pandering to illegals. It's giving illegal-aliens an opportunity they should not be given. They're here illegally and any pandering to them given their illegal status implicitly condones their decision to break our immigration laws.
And to anyone who claims the bill affects the students and not their illegal parents, both parent and child are here illegally, and the parent is awarded for their illegal entry by our giving their child a bonus toward an education. That's pandering and I'll have none of it. Your candidate can go back to Texas and stay there. I'll not vote for him.
If one wanted to do the research I suppose that one could find all the evidence he wanted as to what happened in 2001. I’m just depending on my recollections off that period at the moment but I’ll guarantee you that if Texans were honestly polled on the question today you would find them in overwhelming opposition to in state tuition for illegals!
I’ll have to see if I can find out who actually carried the bills. That was a long time ago and I simply cannot recall.
Almost nobody cares. John McCain won the Republican nomination in ‘08 as an advocate of thinly veiled amnesty. No candidate of either party is going to take any serious steps to deal with the problem of mass illegal immigration. The political class is a monolith on this point. No serious candidate will be better than Rick Perry. Any Democrat will be worse. The public knows this and only a very few zealots will be foolish enough to make voting decisions on the basis of distinctions that make no difference.
Perry's immigration pablum won't hurt in the primaries. It will actively help him with some constituencies, even before the general. In Florida, for example, Perry will gain support for having emphasized his warm concern for the interests of the Hispanic residents of Texas. Any inroads Perry can make among Hispanic voters come next fall will help pad his margin.
Yes Perry insulted us with his droolingly stupid comment about heartlessness. We all need to get over it. At the price of insulting conservatives (who still have no place else to go) Perry has enhanced his appeal to a demographic that is souring on Obama and may be decisive, both in key primary states and in the general. That's probably a good trade. It's silly to get worked up about it, that's just the way the game is played.
