Just say NO to entitlements for illegals! If you educate them then you will be forced to either give amnesty or change the law so that they can be legally employed. And once we reward them even more for breaking the law there will be no border and no sovereignty left.

I was leaning toward Perry until last night. He really lost me with his immigration remarks. I am not going to be able to get past it and I think it put off a lot of folks. I don’t want to face that amnesty fight again that Bush put us through.

Is Perry saying that those who have only a High School education are a drag on society?

I can understand him agreeing with the policy, and appreciate that he is not trying to doubletalk his support of it, but he didn't set it.

FWIW, I agree with your position on the policy.

I don't follow. Why would we have to give the amnesty or change the employment laws just because they have a degree?

If it passed the Texas house exactly what could Perry do to prevent the bill from becoming law? Its a dumb and expensive idea that Texans evidently supported it so thats their problem not mine.

What I am trying to square is: Congress mandated that the localities educate children of illegals K-12, yet it’s illegal to offer in-state college tuition to those same students.

The costs for the K-12 education would be considerably higher for a kid who went thru 13 years of TX public school (assuming s/he was admitted at K) than the ‘savings’ of in-state college tuition. That factors in the special ESL and other special ed features that a child from an illegal alien background would logically require.

So Congress is mandating the localities pay out @ $150-200K over 13 years, but also mandating that they stop there.

This really is a state issue IMO. VA not only doesn’t offer in-state, but IIRC, prohibits admission to our state schools to “undocumented” students. That’s our choice. If TX wants to offer in-state tuition it seems it’s their choice. Its state legislature voted overwhelmingly for it. TX/AZ/NM/CA have been dealing with this issue a whole lot longer than VA/MN/PA/MA, and undoubtedly see a benefit to that continued educational investment.

If Congress had not mandated the K-12 education (not to mention health care/food/shelter) to begin with, this would not be an issue, but again Congress stepped in with an unfunded mandate.

Was there a candidate on that stage who has specifically said no to some type of amnesty or other? I know everyone talks about sealing the border but what happens next?

Regarding Perry's policy, as I understand it, it's basically all graduates of Texas high schools who have spent three years in state qualify for in-state tuition.

This means that the Texas higher-ed authorities aren't tasked with performing in-depth investigations of immigration status.

Correct me if I'm wrong. This, btw, is not giving "scholarships to illegals"

I have much less of a problem with using high school graduation as a benchmark for tuition breaks than with giving free health to illegals as is done in, say, Massachusetts under RomneyCare.

I'll grant Perry should refrain from calling those expressing concern about the policy as being "without hearts".

“And once we reward them even more for breaking the law there will be no border and no sovereignty left.”

And, because of their votes, Democrats will have control of our government for the rest of our lives.
