Vice President Joe Biden compared immigration to the United States for Irish and Hispanic people but noted Hispanic immigrants were here first.
Biden on Thursday hosted the annual Hispanic Heritage Month reception at the Naval Observatory. Guests included about 100 Hispanic veterans, active duty service members, elected officials and others. The music was classical Mexican.
"You all were here before us," Biden said, according to a pool report.
Biden noted his own background as the descendant of Irish immigrants, saying, We come from a similar circumstance. Its about family, its about faith and its about basic things."
The event coincides with a stepped-up effort by the administration to improve relations with Hispanic voters. Once among President Barack Obama's most enthusiastic constituencies, Hispanic support for the administration has flagged with the stall-out of immigration reform and other key priorities.

First their were the indigenous people here and then there were the colonists.... I believe all from Europe.. inclusive of Spain, thus Hispanic.
I think Plugs has taken the trophy for being the most ignorant VP this country has ever had. Congrats!
Algore would agree.
How very “reconquista” of Biden.
Actually, Indians were in Mexico first.
What say you, Plugs?
First their were the indigenous people here and then there were the colonists.... I believe all from Europe.. inclusive of Spain, thus Hispanic.
In northern New Mexico and elsewhere, many hispanics are very proud of their Spanish heritage....they wouldn’t ever think of themselves as Mexicans because they aren’t.
If they were here first, they must be hundreds of years old...
Were not the indigenous people in Mexico, long long before the “Latino” Conquistadors arrived to steal their gold?
Talk about historical revisionism.
Define "here" and "us" and "you" jackass.
Mexico was invaded by Spanyards and Basques (Basques are not Spanyards). Their descendants are considered Hispanic like Cubans, Central Americans and Puerto Ricans, Spanyards and others with Spanish surnames.
Latinos are those from "Latin America" not all Hispanic. From a geographic area.
The left are masters at revisionist history.
“Parts of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California were, indeed, settled by people from Mexico prior to their loss of territory in the Mexican War.”
Very few Mexicans settled north of the Rio Grande. That region was Comancheria, the land of the Comanche and Apache. These were the hardest fighting of North American Indians, and they killed and stole from Mexicans as they willed. The Comanche and Apache weren’t defeated and pacified until well after the Civil War, after decades of battling Texans and the US Army.
Latino: Latin. For example, Italians are Latin speking people.
Who did he have in mind when he said “You were here first”? It can be either the Native Americans, or non-Hispanic European. If he was thinking about Native Americans, that would be incorrect as many Hispanic are of pure European descents. If he was thinking Spaniards as ‘Hispanic’ (which some might find it incorrect), then he probably was thinking about Christopher Columbus. While he came under Spanish banner, he was an Italian. In any case, wasn’t the first Europeans a the Nordic group?
Your tag line is right on.
The inhabitants of what is now Mexico did not speak any Latin based language, until they were invaded by the foreign Conquistadors.
Perhaps Biden should learn to speak Mayan.
Those here first get more coupons, tuition, free medical care, a bucket of chinken licken, a signed autograph of Joe and sticks to beat tax payers with.
Yep. And whatever the language the Aztecs spoke.
I was born here.People who came here illegally weren’t here before me. Also,I don’t there were many Mexicans,Guatamalians,Salvadorans etc. in colonial New England.
Revisionist crap from Biden.
Biden sets out the hispanic narrative. Why he want to duplicate severed heads in America is beyond me.
