Perry Open to Further Intervention in Mexico’s Drug War
The Caucus Blog, NYT ^ | October 1, 2011 | Rich Oppel

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Gov. Rick Perry of Texas said on Saturday that as president, he would consider sending American troops into Mexico to help defeat drug cartels and improve border security. He indicated that any such action would be done “in concert” with the Mexican government.

“It may require our military in Mexico working in concert with them to kill these drug cartels and to keep them off of our border and to destroy their network,” Mr. Perry said during a campaign appearance here.

“I don’t know all the different scenarios that would be out there,” he said. “But I think it is very important for us to work with them to keep that country from failing.”

Sending soldiers into Mexico — even with the approval of the Mexican government — would represent a far more aggressive policy than the one employed by Washington in recent years, despite the stepped-up surveillance and logistical aid that has been provided to Mexican authorities.

The idea would also almost certainly be a non-starter with Mexican authorities. Mexico lost half of its territory to the United States in the 1850s, and ever since it has been very sensitive to the idea of any involvement by American troops in its territory.

........Mr. Perry made the comments about potentially sending troops into Mexico while describing his hopes for increased cooperation with the Mexican government, and he said that if he were elected president, he would work hard to “create a very trusting relationship” with his counterpart in Mexico.

His comments also suggested that he may pursue a far more interventionist military and foreign policy in Mexico, one that is much more expansive that even the widened approach that the Obama administration has sought.......

It is the Federal government's responsibility to secure the border. What is "non" border state politician Obama doing about it but turning his back on Rick Perry when he went to meet him on the tarmac in Austin with a letter -- after being denied a meeting?

Rick Perry: September 15, 2011 - " The bigger issue is that you’re never going to have a conversation that is anything more than an intellectual exercise about immigration until you secure the border. That is what we must focus on as a country. I do not agree that building a 1,800-mile barrier is thoughtful. It’s an easy answer. I think it’s a cop out for anyone who’s actually been on the border. It’s like building a wall from Bangor, Maine to Miami, Florida. What does work is strategic fencing in your metropolitan areas, having the boots on the ground. We are woefully understaffed on that border.

We have the technology. Predator drones are being flown in United States air space as we speak. Why not fly those from Brownsville, Texas, to El Paso and to Tijuana and back and use that real-time information for local law enforcement, our state law enforcement and our federal counterparts? That’s how you thoughtfully secure that border, and then you can have a discussion about what type of immigration reform we want to consider as a country. But not until then. Too many times, we’ve been told, if we’ll just pass this immigration reform then we’ll secure the border. And it hasn’t happened...."

Gov. Perry is the top executive of a border state that has a 1250 mile INTERNATIONAL border that he's repeatedly asked help to secure (even tried to personally hand Obama a letter detailing the problem and asking for federal help as Obama exited Air Force One on a fundraiser to Austin, TX. A letter that he would not take and that Valerie Jarret accepted in a dismissive gesture on the tarmac).

The state of Texas spends $100M yearly from state funds, using among other things an elite Texas Ranger force to try to secure our long border with Mexico. Rick Perry wants and has asked for drones in the air and boots on the ground (but not a fence except in urban areas where it helps).

The Federal government with it's social engineering, it's public school "don't ask for a child's U.S. citizen status" dictate, and their continued inaction on this, have put Texas in the position of resorting to working the problem as it relates to the state. So the children of illegal immigrants who have attended a minimum 3 years of high school in Texas and graduated (who want go on the college) - who are working toward citizenship, they are allowed to pay in-state tuition. This makes them more likely to contribute to the state economy than take from it. This is a big help because Texas pays a lot of money on education and health care costs due to the current federal inaction of securing the border.

I think a President Perry would have the brains and fortitude and the credibility, to finally do something about this -- no one else will. Gov. Perry has said that the border MUST BE SEALED before any talk of "where do we go next" will take place -- he said he will not repeat the cycle that keeps occurring. Gov. Perry also said in the Reagan Library debate that, "If President Obama thinks El Paso, Texas is safer today (which Obama said at a rally during a fund raising trip to the Mexican border town), either he has the worst Intel ever, or he is an abject liar."

Border related crime is a big problem for Texas (for the nation) -- it cost us money and it is a human tragedy of immense scale (crime, human trafficking, drug trafficking...)

It seems pretty apparent that the Military Mexico has now is incapable of dealing with the cartels. Quite possibly because they are in league with the cartels.

I do not believe Mexico is able to secure their own State, and I doubt they would allow us to do it either, but it isn’t a totally bad idea.

Gov. Perry has a good working relationship with Mexico since Texas shares a 1250 border with them and they are the number one trading partner of the U.S.

He would be able to get something done. And seal the border.

Obama can’t and won’t.

And more.

The good ideas are out there but the Obama adm and the Left want to bury us.

Rick Perry's Intriguing Idea for Bi-National Health Insurance …“Contrary to Sen. Santorum’s impression, the idea here was to explore the possibility of allowing private insurers to cover health services provided in either Texas or Mexico. It was an attempt at studying the deregulation of the provision of health insurance by private entities.

Excellant post.

You have clarified a lot of Perry’s perspective.

Romney, et all don’t have a clue! Well, maybe Cain does.
Perry is an executive of a huge state, he has lived there and dealt with this all his life and my observation is that he is the most realistic, yet aggressive, about securing our borders and dealing with immigration.

But then, who cares about states rights anyways, huh?
I have now donned my CKV...”computer Kevlar vest”..ha.

Seems all the Obama adm has done is GIVE guns to the Mexican drug cartels. A Texas ICE special agent was murder with one of those guns. Hundreds of people are believed to be possible victims of those Obama-Holder weapons given to criminals who traffic in drugs and humans. Belief is that the Obama adm was setting up a situation where the sale of these guns would open a challenge to the 2nd Amendment.

Perry is STRONG 2nd Amendment.

Please repost this tonight.

Perry is the only one who is running that is dealing with this problem on a daily basis and I think he has good instincts on this issue. I have been waiting for a President to say this for a very long time.

” - - - he [ You Lie Obama ] is an abject liar - - - “

Over 30,000 Mexicans have been murdered in Mexico in the last 10 years. In one Mexican city school teachers have stopped teaching school because the Mexican drug gangsters are displaying the heads of their murdered victims on bridge railings.

Missionaries have been murdered in broad daylight just to steal their pickup trucks. Whatever the drug gangster wants to take they take, and murder anyone that they want to. It is small wonder that millions of Mexicans have sought safe refuge in the USA.

The primary driver for this slaughter is the US voracious appetite for drugs. Stop consuming drugs America, and restore Mexico to once again being a wonderful place to live and visit.

In one town they’re demanding 1/2 of the teachers’ salaries or they’ll kidnap them. They did kidnap a few and then the teachers stopped teaching and the school closed.

The drug cartel and the border gangs are growing on the border and this is a bad situation for both countries.

It can’t help but be driving more people across the border.

Perry and his counter part in Mexico will lock this down and seal the border.

and worked against freebies for illegal aliens,
we all would have been for him.

We’ve had 35 years of traitorous Republicans and Democrats in the WH and Congress who have refused to secure our borders. Reagan started kit with amnesty.

Now we have nation that is turning into Mexico with all of its historic problems. Mexico has never produced much in its history except for corruption, the siesta, Mexican food, and the sombrero. When the USA imports tens of millions of Mexicans what would make anyone think that this will improve the USA culture and our nation? It won’t.

But the US Chamber of Commerce and these global corporations are buying Congress so they give away our sovereignty and allow open borders. These groups are destroying the USA so they can save $5/hr on labor.

You know that warning you get when you watch a DVD about years in prison and hundreds of thousands in fines for copying a BS Hollywood crap movie, that’s what all employers should get when they counterfeit a legitimate American with an illegal immigrant worker?

Seal the border and Mexico will deal with their problems. Yes it is tempting to say send in USA troops to once again do the dirty work for another nation. But just as with Iraq it won’t be a cakewalk. Those that want it are defense contractors wanting profits. Seal the border and make our nation great again.
