The Time Line of events of Watergate and Monica Lewinsky vs. Gunwalker

Perspective

Perspective is always interesting in judging events. At what point does a scandal turn from merely being a public relations "snafu" into a real crisis for our modern presidents. The best answer might be found in the timelines surrounding the scandals of presidents who faced the spectre of possible or actual impeachment. How much time does it take for a scandal to reach the actual vote or threatened vote of impeachment. If one dislikes the current occupant of the Oval Office, it cannot happen fast enough and if one supports the president, than they hope it dissappears. What if there is actual evidence and it cannot be whitewashed? When evidence or events are proven to be true was it a matter of months or was it years?

Watergate Timeline: Source: Watergate.info)

* June 17, 1972: Five men, one of whom says he used to work for the CIA, are arrested at 2:30 a.m. trying to bug the offices of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate hotel and office complex.

* January 30, 1973: Former Nixon aides G. Gordon Liddy and James W. McCord Jr. are convicted of conspiracy, burglary and wiretapping in the Watergate incident. Five other men plead guilty

* April 30, 1973: Nixon's top White House staffers, H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman, and Attorney General Richard Kleindienst resign over the scandal. White House counsel John Dean is fired.

* May 18, 1973: The Senate Watergate committee begins its nationally televised hearings. Attorney General-designate Elliot Richardson taps former solicitor general Archibald Cox as the Justice Department's special prosecutor for Watergate.

* July 27, 1974: House Judiciary Committee passes the first of three articles of impeachment, charging obstruction of justice.

* August 8, 1974: Richard Nixon

I thought it would be interesting to compare the events to give some perspective.

To me the more interesting comparison is Holder v Elliott Abrams, Caspar Weinberger and Scooter Libby. If Holder were held to the same std as those guys, he’d be in jail.

I pray that is exactly where Holder will be before this over (b4 Soetoro is out).

The comparison is not going to work.

Because of the salacious nature of the Lewinsky deal, the immediate reaction of the MSM seemed to be “Uh-oh, our boy is toast”. It took a day or two for them to realize Clinton would probably survive and a little longer to start turning the thing against the Pubs.

This time the MSM is determined to keep the deal under the rug and not allow it to boil over. Yesterday, the AP said Bush did the same thing and the Pubs are a bunch of hypocrites— not an exact quote, but very close. The MSM is not going to repeat its earlier mistake of actually trying to dig up facts as they did when the Lewinsky story first broke. This is going to be “nothing here to get upset about” the whole way.

Who will become “Gunwalker’s” “Maximum” John Sirica?
Who will become “Gunwalker’s” James McCord?
Who will become “Gunwalker’s” Alexander Butterfield?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Info moves much faster now than even 12 years ago during the Monica scandal. It is pretty clear Holder knew about the program, lied to Congress about it and is now in serious trouble. The real action is who else knew, how far did it go into the White House and did Bam know.

It is hard to imagine that Holder will rat out the Bamster, but if there are memos, meeting notes and maybe tapes :-), then Bam is at serious risk.

This is an easy one to grasp, dead border agents because the ATF was playing games.

Holder is toast, it remains to see who else goes down.

The only reason I bring up the comparison as a timeline is merely to show that even when the press is against the president (Nixon), or when there was damning physical evidence (Monica) the process drags out.

I do not disagree that the media will carry Obama’s water. As discovery plays out and physical evidence is presented to Issa’s committe, who knows what will happen (Serendipity)?

No coincidence, Holder came from the stink of the Clinton administration.

It brings up all sorts of interesting scenarios. If Holder has to go down, will he get a presidential pardon? I think that the John Dean of this mess could come from one of the disaffected ATF agents. Documents might have been collected. Physical evidence too. However, the discovery process could yield something that nobody could think of.

You rightly point out that this will probably go past next year’s election.

The next president will have to decide if having a criminal trial of their predecessor is “good for the country”.

This is a criminal conspiracy with the principals as accessories to murder.

I suggest the next POTUS turn Obama and Holder over to the Mexican gov’t for prosecution!

This story has legs, Holder will NOT get a pardon IMHO. Issa etal are working behind the scenes to find their "John Dean". I am guessing there are plenty of volunteers, this program cannot have been that popular. It has become especially toxic because of the dead agents (and who knows what else).

I will be surprised if Bam is not implicated in some manner, but he will just be damaged goods, this is not likely to take him down. Some big fish in the WH is squirming right now however. Maybe Valarie J? We can only hope ...

I like the poem on your home page. Who wrote it? I have many fond memories of living in TX for nearly 10 years, and I attest that what is writ about Texas grit on your home page is true. I just wish that the author had had it in his heart to credit, also, The Yellow Rose for keeping Santa Anna occupied so that Genl. Sam could take them by surprise. The Yellow Rose

The thing that infuriates me the most is that these arms were smuggled into Mexico straight into the hands of criminals. I wouldn’t blame the Mexicans for declaring war on us. Or, taking us to the World Court for aggressive actions by our government against their government.

You need to add the resignation of Nixon VP Spiro Agnew in Oct 1973 after charges brought against him. I think it is pretty well accepted that the Repubs saw the handwriting on the wall for Nixon and could not stomach Agnew for President and felt to save the party in next election that Ford stood a better chance.

Nachum,
I was in D.C. during Watergate.
This is exactly correct. It takes time.
What we can hope for is that Issa Grassley etc bite like a bulldog and refuse to let go.
In the last week alone there have been stories from the L.A. Times to the No where Journel spreading the news about this. It is mushrooming and this Geenie will not get stuffed back in some bottle.
Nixon lied, no one died.
A federal agent has been killed and a whole lot of Mexicans too. You can run but you can’t hide there B.H.O

I worked communications at the Pentagon.CIA FBI Joint Chiefs
Justice Dept. etc. Very interesting, exciting and fun.
Learned a bucket full about our gubmint.
Back then you could just walk in and around the Capital.
Went last year and it was locked down like fort knox.
Ten times worse than when even Bill and Hill were there.
Guess they feel a bit more worried about safety nowadays.
