Shotguns, buckshot, SHTF
With all of the insane government spending going on, and the potential of nasty inflation hitting soon, I have been looking for things to buy that have utility, trading value, and long term storage life.
I have been heavily involved in the gun culture, grew up in it, studied it, and have been a professional for the last 16 years.
Almost everyone has a shotgun. Usually it is a 12 gauge, although there are plenty of 20, 16, and 410 shotguns out there. Most people have a box or two of bird shot. They might have a few slugs, maybe a couple of rounds of buckshot, but most do not have even a magazine full of buckshot or slugs. Worse, in this area, buckshot is not heavily stocked. I doubt if the local stores have a collective inventory of 200 boxes, for a population of 100,000.
I had a couple of boxes of buckshot and slugs. I did some research and came to the conclusion that buckshot was the best SHTF shotgun round to have, and that the type developed for sale to law enforcement was the best of the bunch, and not that much more expensive. With the best LE type buckshot, all the pellets will be in a 6-9 inch group at 25 yards, and it is likely that you would get multiple hits on a man sized target at 100 yards. It turns a small game and bird getter into a very effective militia/SHTF weapon.
Most people do not have buckshot because they do not use it regularly. I happen to know my neighbors and I trust them. If the SHTF, I want them armed, and I want them confident in their arms. I pondered the situation and decided on this course of action.
I ordered a case of what I think is the best buckshot out there, Federal LE 9 pellet 00 buck with the Flight Control wad. A person that I know well in a State Patrol said that they tested it extensively, and that it gave incredible patterns (about 6 inches at 25 yards). This is also a reasonably mild load at 1145 fps, works great in manually operated shotguns, but may not work in all auto loaders.
Having a box of factory ammo that says : FEDERAL PREMIUM LAW ENFORCEMENT AMMUNITION, TACTICAL, just might put a little more spine into a recently formed informal militiaman when they need it.
I will be giving a couple of 5 round boxes of this ammo to all of my neighbors who have 12 gauges this Christmas. I believe that it will be better received than fruitcake. They all know me as a firearms instructor, so that gives it a bit more credibility.
I was able to find a case of this ammunition on the Internet for $225 dollars for 250 rounds including shipping. Other brands can be had for as little as $150/250rds, including shipping.
Buck shot is a relatively heavy munition, it is bulky, and a shotgun is not my first choice for a SHTF firearm, but for a great many people, it is the best that they have.
I highly recommend getting to know your neighbors before the SHTF.
Do most Freepers who have shotguns have a good supply of buckshot?
My opinion is that if a man can own only 1 gun, it should be a 12 gauge shotgun of some kind. It can do everything from hunting to fighting, within its limitations. And a supply of buckshot will generally deal with most problems.....

Beretta hi cap mags work just fine when the mag catch on the Beretta mags is made a bit larger. I have ‘enough’. Also have several Taurus 92 mags as well, all test fired. I rotate mags keeping two or three loaded. That Taurus, BTW, functions flawlessly.

Are you not even aware that paper work requiring law inforcement approval is needed before making a purchase or you should have a bill of sale if selling to another citizen - so the paper trail is already there! Not only that, folks inventories change all the time as in selling stuff off.

All I ever heard from gun snobs was the taurus 92F was junk, but theres not that much in it that can fail, and the open top feeding makes jams less likely.
I also like the cocked and locked feature. They are a bit heavy to me for CCW though.
Ive had my eye out for compact version of that particular taurus even though I have two glocks. Ive been wanting another 9mm to have on hand as a loaner to trusted visitors who find themselves without a sidearm in a SHTF emergency. If I can find one used and unpapered at a decent deal, I might even buy it.
I keep my Mossberg 500a tactical locked and loaded with 2 rounds of #8 bird shot first up in the magazine followed by 4 rounds of 00 buck shot for any intruder who isn’t properly persuaded by the first two rounds.
I'm still a .45 ACP man though. I have a Taurus OSS DS beside the bed that I trust my life to. I've put around 1000 rounds through that .45ACP and liked it so much I bought a 40S&W in OSS DS. A few Taurus pistols in the modern batch might need a bit of tuning, but I find them to be very reliable and now well made. Their magazines however often need 'filing' work to function reliably.

When the BATFFBIDHS comes knocking to register your guns, this is the answer you give them.
At ranges inside of 35 yards or so there is no more effective personal defense weapon than the 12 gauge shotgun loaded with buckshot. At that range it’s ballistically equivalent to striking an assailant with 9 9mm rounds simultaneously. That’s serious firepower.
Anyone’s SHTF stash should have as much of this type of ammunition for the shotgun of your choice as one can reasonably procure.
Coincidentally I was at Cabelas last weekend and they had cases of what was marked as Military Grade MG Buck, $4.99 for a box of five. Winchester is the manufacturer. I tossed 10 of them in my cart along with another brick of .22 LR ammo. Why not?
Cabelas webpage says the muzzle velocity on these is 1325 fps. Obviously this isn’t the Federal that you wrote about, but at that price in those quantities there’s really no reason not to have 20 or 30 boxes of this stuff on hand.
Of course one should test this in an autoloader to be sure it functions well, but for almost any pump on the market I’d recommend this stuff without reservation.

For some time now some Freepers who usually post on gun threads have thought it witty to say that if confronted by government agents who intend to get their guns, they would say that they lost them in a boating accident.
Why one would be carrying their guns in a boat (aside from shotguns in bird hunting) is beyond my understanding.
