Today, millions of smart, hard working Americans are flipping burgers, waiting tables or working dead end retail jobs not because they want to, but because they have no other options.

If they really are that smart and hard-working, they will gradually move up through the ranks. A good employee is worth his or her weight in gold.

Didn’t Herman Cain start in the food/restaurant business by actually flipping burgers and making pizza?

Not always. One of the worst things about working at a crummy job are the crummy managers that you have to work for, especially the affirmative action managers. If you are an educated white male working in some workplaces you have to keep your mouth shut while the affirmative action managers take credit for work done by others. Bad managers don’t recognize good employees. I am in a job like that now. I am looking for something better, but there is not much to chose from.

LOL! You haven't worked for an American company have you? Intelligence and work ethic mean nothing, the ability to kiss ass and the MBA's rule of taking care of their own is what will get you ahead.

Do you really think all these "Senior vice presidents for global support services", "Director of Communications for the East Coast", “Vice President of Mission Related Services”, “Vice President of Administrative Services”, etc, etc, etc that infest every American buisness got where they are by working hard and being intelligent?

And then your company is bought out or shipped out and you are the smartest most hard-working guy on the unemployed line.

Not necessarily.

If you’re doing one of those dead-end jobs, you’re probably working upwards of 100 hours a week to get by, which doesn’t leave much time or energy for improving one’s job skills.

And most employers will think you’re useless if that’s all you’ve done, regardless of how much you shine on the job.

If they are young maybe that is true. If not, if lucky they
will have contract gigs that go long term.

Some companies will retain CS (contingent staff) long term to avoid raising the FTE headcount totals.

Your "good employees" are a dime a dozen here in S.E. Michigan. A "good employee" is only as good as an employer looking for one and as of this date, nobody's looking........

"Move" you say? Sure, you've got a house under water in a market that is not buying and you're thinking of moving out of state for a job opportunity? At the age of lets say, 55 - 60? Good luck with that.......

Got a friend who lost his job with GM about 6 years ago, had to sell his house at a loss and buy a smaller one, took small jobs around the area at minimum wage, finally got a contracting job in N.C. and worked there for about 6 months while using his salary to send home monies and pay his rent on a small apartment in N.C.

Moved home after contract expired, was offered a full time job with the company he was contracting with, turned it down only to find out a few months later they went out of business.......

He eventually got another contracting job which sent him to Germany for many months which was especially stressing on he and his family.........Couldn't take the separation any more and had to move home.

People are doing what they can in this economy so don't dismiss these people with your nonchalant attitude that jobs are readily available for the "smart and hard working"........that just ain't so.

One only has to look at all the family job shops and small manufacturing facilities in this area that have gone out of business to realize that this isn't the recession of the Carter era. Back then they only laid off, now they have have gone out of business completely.......Including my own company that employed me for almost 35 years...........

Are you kidding? Tens of millions of good employees have been dumped like yesterdays garbage. You clearly are not paying attention to current events or this article.
