Today, millions of smart, hard working Americans are flipping burgers, waiting tables or working dead end retail jobs not because they want to, but because they have no other options. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 14 million Americans are currently unemployed and another 9.3 million Americans are currently "underemployed".

I wonder how many of those working dead-end jobs are simply out “on strike”. Rather to work a dead-end job than go up the ladder (only got get pummeled, taxed and regulated to death).

Bingo. We need to produce what we consume and create jobs for lower class people who used to do these jobs w dignity and purchasing power to raise a family and have a decent life.

No, it was harder for the govt to steal since there was a standard and something akin to a brake not allowing the govt to print fake money at it own whim.
The politicians’ quest for more and more spending and more power could never be satisfied by a controlled currency so they came up with a perfect counterfeiting operation w the Federal Reserve. But at least we had something with Bretton Woods until Nixon dropped that.
Now - we have insanity with no checks or balances whatsoever.

Concerning Bob Graham, if I lived in Florida at the time, I would probably voted for him as governor. I know he got Florida to start doing the death penalty. However, he was the old style democrat and not modern day communist who is a DINO.
On his working various jobs, I heard a story that he was checking in luggage at one of the airports. Would have been interesting to see !

I have grown disgusted with many Freepers here who think that today is twenty years ago. I know that we are fortunate that hubby, who is over fifty, still has his job. But I have an 18 year old daughter, and boy, is it going to be different for her.
The inability of many here to open their minds to understand that this is not your average downturn, well, I just get sick at it. It is heartless and unbefitting of this place.
Somehow I think that has less to do with than our tax rates for corperations, the EPA, OSHA, etc.
Many are partisan hacks who buy the Hannity / Rush / Fox News / GOP = GOOD DEMO = BAD without ever moving beyond that line of thought.
The Wall Street/GOVT/Media complex are all at fault for dumbing down the citizenry and intentionally confusing people as to what is going on.
What makes it valuable is a different question.
What makes money valuable is that people accept it as legal tender for all debts public and private.
The world sends us tons of finished products - and we give them little pieces of paper.
Someday we may have to actually pay back those billions of dollars and they won't be worth nearly as much - but we can just print them up to pay them off.
But making it ‘harder’ was not what was stated. The statement as written was pure 100% historically ignorant bullexcrement.
Governments in history with gold and silver currency had NO PROBLEMS AT ALL taking money from some and giving it to others - it was kind of their stock in trade. Not much has changed - other than almost every advanced nation in the world moving away from commodity backed currency.

Your "good employees" are a dime a dozen here in S.E. Michigan. A "good employee" is only as good as an employer looking for one and as of this date, nobody's looking........
"Move" you say? Sure, you've got a house under water in a market that is not buying and you're thinking of moving out of state for a job opportunity? At the age of lets say, 55 - 60? Good luck with that.......
Got a friend who lost his job with GM about 6 years ago, had to sell his house at a loss and buy a smaller one, took small jobs around the area at minimum wage, finally got a contracting job in N.C. and worked there for about 6 months while using his salary to send home monies and pay his rent on a small apartment in N.C.
Moved home after contract expired, was offered a full time job with the company he was contracting with, turned it down only to find out a few months later they went out of business.......
He eventually got another contracting job which sent him to Germany for many months which was especially stressing on he and his family.........Couldn't take the separation any more and had to move home.
People are doing what they can in this economy so don't dismiss these people with your nonchalant attitude that jobs are readily available for the "smart and hard working"........that just ain't so.
One only has to look at all the family job shops and small manufacturing facilities in this area that have gone out of business to realize that this isn't the recession of the Carter era. Back then they only laid off, now they have have gone out of business completely.......Including my own company that employed me for almost 35 years...........
I was very fortunate to find my full time current job. I was getting to the point of either having to move or try to get with the University full time which didn’t happen. Colorado Springs use to have a lot of high tech work but it is pretty well gone now. Before I worked for a DoD contractor. They are not bringing any new work to Colorado. Just about all new work is going to the DC area but who wants to live there with the high cost of living and the mindset of “live to work” where you are either sleeping or at the office working ! Almost 4 years ago, I was laid off after being given a choice of either moving to Virginia or the door.
And the job I am in now, many people like me and my cohorts are fighting to keep our jobs now since management is doing so much changes and not for the better of employees ! Same pay but workloads are increasing significantly and we are expected to deliver our results ASAP and quality has really gone down !

This too shall pass. Carter and the democrats had the misery index over 20 and gas lines were the order of the day. I had ets’d around that time and my wife, my 2 kids and I lived in a tent. That was the closest my girls ever got to summer camp. We didn’t have much then, we have much more now but the happy quotient is still about the same when you adjust for the 6 grandkids.
Recently I lost my job because it made better business sense to layoff one 60 year old engineer than 2 younger ones for the same savings. I’m OK with that since I can financially absorb a layoff better than any of my co workers.
But I remain optimistic about America and it’s ability to change the course of state when necessary and right now it is necessary to remain steadfast in support of conervative principles and free market capitalism. Open. Americas energy spigot, jail employers and government officials who knowingly hire illegals and get government out of markets and you’ll see increases in hiring, wages and standards of living once again. But most of all we will all be more free and to me that’s the most important lesson I teach my grandkids.

The problem is that we are not a capitalistic nation anymore.
Our health care is being socialized, the public schools are socialized, SS is socialism. Student loans can only come from the government. It appears the same is true for homes today. These are being nationalized right under our noses.
We don’t have free market capitalism and haven’t had it for sometime.
Getting back to that, yes! Are we there now? no.
You are assuming they have intelligence.
Obviously they did not.
Uh, neither.
So what do you want someone to say or do? You just want the perfect job to be delivered to you?
Sorry if I dont have magic fairy dust to make your life whole.
You can either slog it out or sit and cry.
Every downturn brings out people to assume it’s the most unique downturn ever in history.
Doesn’t matter if it was the 30s early 80’s, 1991, 2001, or now.
Every person can either rise to the occasion or look for a shoulder to cry on and a soft pat on the rear.
FR is not the place to look for tear talk.
