According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 14 million Americans are currently unemployed and another 9.3 million Americans are currently "underemployed".

If they really are that smart and hard-working, they will gradually move up through the ranks. A good employee is worth his or her weight in gold.

I worked at IBM for some years and watched them gut the U.S. work force while creating tens of thousands of jobs in India.

Wall St. forces a focus on ‘the quarter’, which results in myopic corporations and CEO’s to lose anything resembling long-term vision. The impact on the country figures not a jot in their calculus....trust me. Zero. Nada.

Add to that the uncertainty within the business community due to the idiots in Washington, crushing taxes and bureaucratic regulations and “compliance”, moronic Socialists in government at the State and Federal levels, and a general dumbing down of our populace via an insipid public school/university system, you have a recipe not just for disaster, but for the end of a once-great societal experiment.

I’m one of them too. Self-employed, out of work, and no unemployment to collect.

Didn’t Herman Cain start in the food/restaurant business by actually flipping burgers and making pizza?

We are meant to pursue God with a passion.

Work is for putting food in our mouths and a roof over our heads.

This is the endgame. This is what you get with conceited moronic theories of free trade. This is what you get with outsourcing. People got very rich selling out America, this is one thing the OWS protestors have right.

I m in this boat. I am self employed - busting my ass, Accounts Receivable is horrendous, and barely have anything left ofer after bills, insurance, e o insurance, office rent, staff, etc.

It sucks. My GF can’t understand what this is like and it adds a lot of street to the situation.

Today, millions of smart, hard working Americans are flipping burgers, waiting tables or working dead end retail jobs not because they want to, but because they have no other options.

So a days hard work is now evil and detested in the USA.

Besides, truthfully, if they are "smart" and "hard working" they aren't flipping burgers for very long.

It has become a status symbol any more to sit on your a$$ and not earn a dime but get paid a millionaires wages.

The author of this piece, Michael Snyder, makes some harsh but valid points. We can bloviate all day long about all the stupid, harmful things done by various administrations and congresses that got us into the terrible economic state we're in today but the bitter truth is that when you're unemployed with no real prospects and your middle class life is slipping away or you're 'lucky' enough to be working at some crummy part-time job for just over minimum wage simply to stay afloat, economically, coming home tired and discouraged and feeling like a loser, all the lofty economic theories and 'jobs' plans the politicians put out there, including tax reform plans, as necessary as they are, ring hollow. I've read that President Jimmy Carter never actually said "malaise" but even if he didn't, that is what too many Americans are feeling, today. I fear that this cannot end well for America.

“If they really are that smart and hard-working, they will gradually move up through the ranks. A good employee is worth his or her weight in gold.”

Not always. One of the worst things about working at a crummy job are the crummy managers that you have to work for, especially the affirmative action managers. If you are an educated white male working in some workplaces you have to keep your mouth shut while the affirmative action managers take credit for work done by others. Bad managers don’t recognize good employees. I am in a job like that now. I am looking for something better, but there is not much to chose from.

And where, does this article say that all these college graduates think they should be CEO?

Oh, that’s right, they didn’t.

What a brainless, didn’t get the point, comment.

A lot of managers will find any way they can to fire somebody they think is a threat to their job.

LOL! You haven't worked for an American company have you? Intelligence and work ethic mean nothing, the ability to kiss ass and the MBA's rule of taking care of their own is what will get you ahead.

Do you really think all these "Senior vice presidents for global support services", "Director of Communications for the East Coast", “Vice President of Mission Related Services”, “Vice President of Administrative Services”, etc, etc, etc that infest every American buisness got where they are by working hard and being intelligent?
