Many Michigan Public Employees Among Country's Top Wage Earners
Michigan Capitol Confidential ^ | 11/11/2011 | Tom Gantert

While the Occupy Wall Street protesters’ wrath has been focused on "the rich" from the private sector, there are plenty of public-sector employees in Michigan who are among the top wage earners in the country.

The Tax Foundation found that the top 5 percent of income earners in the U.S. in 2009 made at least $154,643.

Michigan Capitol Confidential took a look at some of Michigan’s government employees who are paid with tax dollars who fall in that top 5 percent. The salaries listed are the most recent available from public records or news reports. Those “rich” employees came from all areas of the public sector; from schools to universities to state economic agencies, from libraries to zoos.

Mary Sue Coleman, University of Michigan president, made $585,783 in 2011. On top of her base salary of $585,738, Coleman also received a $100,000 retention bonus and $100,000 in deferred compensation.

Ann Arbor Public Schools Superintendent Patricia Green makes $245,000 a year.

Michael Finney, who is the CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., makes $250,000.

Richard Homberg made $288,528 in 2009 as Detroit Public TV’s president and general manager.

Ron Kagan, CEO of the Detroit Zoo, made $231,461 in 2009.

Of course they are. Government workers are the modern day nobility and the taxpayer serfs are required to support them on penalty of going to jail. The sooner Americans realize that, the better.

Will the entitlement generation ever figure out that big government is the majority of the 1%’ers?

Mary Sue Coleman, University of Michigan president, made $585,783 in 2011.

In 2003, the US Supreme Court ruled in Gratz v. Bollinger that the University of Michigan undergrad admissions policy was unconstitutional because it took "affirmative action" to such an extreme that it violated the Fourteenth Amendment's "equal protection" clause.

Although Mary Sue Coleman issued a press release in which she said the University's undergrad admissions policy will be modified to abide by the SCOTUS ruling, no such modification - to the best of our knowledge - has ever been implimented. Mary Sue is therefore in contempt of the highest court in the land. Yet the regents at the U of M have seemingly put no pressure on her to comply with the SCOTUS, and she continues to receive her inflated pay check from state taxpayers. She should have been shown the exit years ago!

Sounds to me like she needs to be jailed and she’s not the only one. Detroit has been ignoring state supreme court orders to turn in vote tallies in a timely manner for years. (they wait to see how many votes they need)

In the wake of my city’s approval of a 30% property tax increase, I have been diving deep into the most recent budget available. It expired in June of 2011, but it contained nearly $700M in capital spending plans. That is on an annual income of just under $100M that is not already captured for the schools, police or fire dept.

As if that is not enough, they have 38 mayoral appointed “boards” or “commissions” investigating how to spend more! One of these “boards” is investigating building a Heliport! Yes, a heliport! We already have at least 2 privately owned heliports in this city already, those are the ones that I can think of immediately. The only reason that I can think of for the city to need a heliport is to fly their fellow ruling class members from the aiport that is about 25 minutes away.....

The more I dig, the madder I get....I am only through about 80 pages of the 380 total pages in that budget!
