There were chaotic scenes as protesters resisted police
New York police have dismantled the Occupy Wall Street camp in Zuccotti Park and arrested more than 70 people following a raid in the early hours.
It was the latest camp to be cleared by police in US cities in recent days.
In a Tuesday morning news conference, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended the eviction, saying there had been a conflict between protecting public health and safety and the protesters' First Amendment rights.
For the city of New York, this has been a balancing act all along between the constitutional right to free speech and freedom of expression and the right of people in the city to get on with their lives.
City officials tried to walk that tightrope, but in the end the park's owners said the conditions there were disgusting and asked for police to clear it.
"Unfortunately, the park was becoming a place where people came not to protest, but rather to break laws, and in some cases, to harm others," Mr Bloomberg said.
"The First Amendment gives every New Yorker the right to speak out - but it does not give anyone the right to sleep in a park or otherwise take it over to the exclusion of others."
Police in New York gave an announcement as their operation began, telling protesters: "The city has determined that the continued occupation of Zuccotti Park poses an increasing health and fire safety hazard."
Leaflets were handed out telling occupants to "immediately remove all private property" and warning they would be arrested if they interfered with the operation.
Street cleaning crews then moved in to clear rubbish and hose down the privately owned park.

And if you think the Occupy Wall Street people are crazy, you haven't seen the latest episode of the "Les Dowrey Show" featuring the OWS protestors.
End the Fed? Where have I heard that before?
And now the Occupy crowd will complain of police brutality and other “crimes” against their constitutional rights.
I expect lawsuits to come out of this.
I never understood how anyone has a constitutional right to camp out in a city park anyway. We’re talking about a city park with no facilities for overnight camping, no bathroom facilities, no cooking facilities, etc. but these people were tolerated anyway. They should be happy that they were tolerated as long as they were.
I’m sure in their liberal minds, the protesters think that this proves that America is a racist, sexist, fascist nation, if police would move against them.
Can’t wait for good liberals such as Olbermann and Michael Moore to weigh in on this action.
How about every bleeding-heart media liberal who complains about these “evictions” offer to let the bums camp on THEIR front lawns?
Would love to see that multi-millionaire-hypocrite Michael Moore nailed on this!
Ya, Moore has that beautiful lakefront vacation home. He should invite everyone up there to camp out on his property. Put your money where your mouth is, Michael!
Finally - someone GETS the obvious...
There's room for all of them at Mooore's vacation home... he needs to invite his 'friends' over for a few months... and feed them...

Why did the liberal mayors oust the Occupier/scumbags this week?

Why have so many major cities turned on the Occupiers?
The liberal mayors/leaders of Oakland, Portland, New York City and other cities, this week have decided that the Occupier/scumbags are not welcome. Across the nation liberal mayors have sent in cops in their cities , to move the scumbags out of their encampments and tear down their encampments.
So what has happened and why this week?
Did the mayors finally wake and realized that these scumbags were not the 99% of he/she/its in white hats?
Did the merchants in the impacted areas finally convince the mayors that their businesses were being devastated and would not have a lot of sales tax $s to give to the cities due to their lost business?
Did the mayors finally listen to Public Health Doctors/Nurses and others that these encampments were huge germ/virus pools that could threaten large sections of the citys population not involved?
Did the daily rapes/murders/robberies/fights in the encampments finally wake up the mayors?
Did the mayors fear a massive backlash from independent and working democrat voters in their cities or even recalls?
There was probably a lot of the above and other factors that influenced the mayors.
How about another factor. Did the DNC run focus groups of working voters in those cities and find out that the Occupier scumbags in each city were probably costing the Democrats votes across the nation?
Well, something happened, and it probably was not a coincidence, that this week, the left wing mayors of these liberal cities across America, decided to take out the Occupier Garbage, human and infectious garbage.
YOu are right, it cannot possibly be a coincidence. Perhaps the Dem mayors got their marching orders from “above”.
IMO the Occupukes are another FAIL by 0bastards and his gang - like AttackWatch, the flashmobs - I made a list a while ago. They were hoping many would join the Occupoops and they would become a burning fuse ushering in a lot of violence.
Too many mayors across the nation on the first part of a week, moving against their beloved scumbags, is beyond circumstance or random events.
Not a coincidence any more than the Occupukes were a spontaneous grass roots “protest”.
