What company gave us the 21st century?

Walter Isaacsson has, recently, completed a great work on Steve Jobs.

My relatives will probably force me to read it (even though Isaacson was the former head of CNN, they're Conservatives and I'm a 42 year old with a will of my own) but prefer his magnificent study of Einstein as far books go.

Anyhow, what do people actually understand about how and in what ways the IT sector of the economy has transformed all of our lives?

Being Swedish, I wish to draw attention to what a marvelous revolution a certain poor peasant boy from the region of Värmland once initiated.

His last name was Ericsson.

Why did mobile telecommunication explode in Scandinavia already in the late 1980's (when most other people were using silly pagers), howcome Nordic governments were so daring in building/promoting real mobile infrastructure back then and why have California and Japan lost so much ground to companies like Ericsson and Nokia (and why couldn't Skype have been invented in, say, Osaka?)

You can't just all blame it on Bush..

You could say that all the companies that are shipping all the jobs offshore America and mortgage crisis and economic crises have given us the 21st century. :)

“What company gave us the 21st Century?”

This question is premature and absurd. The 21st Century has yet to arrive as close to 90 years of it remain to be seen.

If you could name just one company (impossible, IMHO) as being responsible for bringing us “the future” it would have to have been one whose accomplishments and contributions happened back in the 20th Century. We’re still closer to living in the 20th Century than we are to the 21st.

Nothing changes on New Year’s Day.

his [Isaacson's] magnificent study of Einstein?

I have read his bio of Einstein. It is thin gruel compared to the biographical works of, say, Manchester, Caro, Martin Gilbert, Toland, et al.

What corporative efforts bring about real change?

Personally, I think Ericsson has altered the way we live and communicate more than any other company. Ford Motor Company of course is a rival.

Other people might disagree.

Best of regards from Gothenburg, Sweden.

Motorola in many ways spearheaded mobile telecommunication, just like Nokia did, but Ericsson bothered more about the infrastructural aspect than competitors.

This aspect of their planning has paid off.

Hey, all you FReepers! Don't you know that without Sweden we'd still be in the dark ages?

That about sum up your posting history, WC?

I won’t sponsor your trip, but why not find a nice Scandinavian girl/boy through the Internet, a job over here in Sweden and build a nice house for yourselves?

F**k that attitude of yours. At least some relative must have been a warrior in your history. Come on.

No better soldiers in the world, then us Canadians.

But Sweden women are very pretty.

“No better soldiers in the world, then us Canadians.”

You’re not dead yet, so I assume the Scots of the 18th century performed better in this respect.

They’re dead, we’re not.

We win!

Hitler had high respect for the Canadians, apparently because we had the biggest heads in WWII, amongst the prisoners.

But I do understand that he also feared the Scots. “Ladies from Hell”, he called them.

It’s not a valid question. Ask who brought us the 20th century and Ford might be a reasonable answer. But where would Ford be without Standard Oil or Firestone or US Steel? It’s simply not a reasonable question.
