Confessions of a Light Bulb Addict

Please don’t think this is easy for me. I’m one of those crazed Americans who can’t walk into Home Depot, Target or my local grocery store right now without wanting to grab one of those king-sized shopping carts and stuff it to the gunwales with 100-watt incandescent light bulbs.

Maybe it’s the sheer thrill of buying bulbs that in just over a month, as of Jan. 1, 2012, will be banned for sale in America. What fun, in this incandescent twilight, to acquire legally what the federal government will soon treat as contraband, should it appear in any American marketplace. Or maybe it’s that gut sense that with the dollar teetering toward an abyss of unfathomable and inflationary government spending, those beloved old 100 watt bulbs will at least provide a decent store of value, even if all I do is use them to read by for the rest of my life — meticulously taking care never to violate federal law by offering even a single bulb for sale to some fellow citizen willing to pay for it.

Or, just possibly, this urge to stockpile incandescents is the product of simmering outrage. For decades, I have written about America as the world’s beacon of freedom, which it has been. Yet here we are, wards of the nanny state, with politicians dictating that even that prime symbol of American ingenuity, Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb, shall be regulated into oblivion.

The Euro-peons banned incandescent bulbs some time ago and the USA just followed right along. Thanks, Pres. Bush.

The Euro-peon-ization of America rages on!

And ESL bulbs will make LEDS bulbs obsolete.

Yes this is a stupid law, and government (Bush of all people?) overstepped wildly with this.

It’s petty and stupid.

We need to start sending congress home for months at a time.

We have enough laws. We do not need any more.

Not even one.

I never said that incandescent lights didn’t have a purpose. I was just saying that you were wrong with your whole thought process about using them to treat SAD.

What’s ESL?

I already have a couple LED bulbs, not actually using any incendescent anymore (by choice, go away government)

Never heard of ESL other than a language class. What’s an ESL bulb?

Scratch that, you meant Subsyndrome Seasonal Affective Disorder. I’m not too quick this evening.

That was just my first volley from ‘04 or so.

Now we have the serious and widespread problem of water wells unable to pump because they froze up due to the curlies not providing the heat Americans have used forever.

Does DC really want the lawsuits when everybody has no water because 100yr old heating and de-frosting techniques to keep water running are now illegal, pipes bursting everywhere, because some Congressmen got some green ki$$ from somewhere?

“do the same things as the original item.”

No they don’t. They don’t turn on at the flip of a switch, they are not at full power when they first light, and they take several minutes to get to full power. ;-)

They also should not be turned off - or else they won’t last all that long as (deceptively) advertized.

If any Freepers are in need of light bulbs, I’ll be happy to ship them some from Japan.

“until 1.1.2013 when Federal Agents kick in your front door without a warrant and search your home for contraband light bulbs.”

Source? Is there a code telling us this will happen?

Or is this just if they “suspect you’re selling bulbs”?

Great idea.

Except the NAZIs will probably be checking all incoming packages for “contraband”.

Better not write it in your “page”. The NAZIs will find it and shut down your page/account so we benighted Americans can’t see what you’re selling.

“Completely different from SSAD.”

Are you sure?

They seem to have very well lit homes with great furniture and lots of fabulous artwork. I could see why they would need the best lighting.

Not saying the incandescents should be banned, but this seems to be a possible replacement:

Not cheap, but I would think they’ll do the same job.

Liberals want teenagers to have the freedom to kill an unborn child 10 minutes before birth...

and for adults to be able to marry their dogs if 'it feels good'...

But the freedom to pick our own light bulbs? Or to chose the type of toilet we want? Or detergent for our dishwashers? That they won't allow...

something's amiss here...

Installed a few of the new curly bulbs in my Mom’s basement. When you turn them on they emit very little light for about the first minute making the basement look very grim. I’d call them “soviet style” lighting.

Electron Stimulated Light. I think it works on the same principal as a cathode ray tube in TVs. That’s why I call them TV bulbs.

"buggy whips"

The Amish can tell us that much. As long as there are Amish, there will be buggy whips.

Not saying the incandescents should be banned,

But they were.

That’s the problem.

Throw them all out in ‘12.

Don't forget the 150 Watt bulbs. I have a good supply of both 100 Watt and 150 Watt. Not a curly bulb in the house!
