Confessions of a Light Bulb Addict

Please don’t think this is easy for me. I’m one of those crazed Americans who can’t walk into Home Depot, Target or my local grocery store right now without wanting to grab one of those king-sized shopping carts and stuff it to the gunwales with 100-watt incandescent light bulbs.

Maybe it’s the sheer thrill of buying bulbs that in just over a month, as of Jan. 1, 2012, will be banned for sale in America. What fun, in this incandescent twilight, to acquire legally what the federal government will soon treat as contraband, should it appear in any American marketplace. Or maybe it’s that gut sense that with the dollar teetering toward an abyss of unfathomable and inflationary government spending, those beloved old 100 watt bulbs will at least provide a decent store of value, even if all I do is use them to read by for the rest of my life — meticulously taking care never to violate federal law by offering even a single bulb for sale to some fellow citizen willing to pay for it.

Or, just possibly, this urge to stockpile incandescents is the product of simmering outrage. For decades, I have written about America as the world’s beacon of freedom, which it has been. Yet here we are, wards of the nanny state, with politicians dictating that even that prime symbol of American ingenuity, Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb, shall be regulated into oblivion.

The leftist aka progressive treehuggers for over 5 decades have been trying to ban the use of mercury. And now they jump on the mercury bandwagon. Just read the writing on the side of these bulbs packages. They cannot be thrown away. If you break one. Have fun cleaning it up. These leftist aka progressive treehuggers are killing the planet one moronic fix at a time.

Guess I’ll be heading off to buy some 100w bulbs with the Christmas money. Bummer.

I need to stock up on, uh, tree bulbs during the holidays.

Okay, my rant. We have had an artificial tree with gold mini-Christmas lights for over a decade. I loved the nice soft glow those lights gave to the tree and you could see my ornaments very clearly.

I also have been collecting Hallmark ornaments for longer than that and have some of the light/light & sound ornaments. These are mostly Star Trek ornaments. (Whenever I turned the tree lights on, Worf wishes me Ka-Pah.) Anyway, the lights were finally burning out so, last year we had to get new lights for the tree. It was at this point that we came to realize that you could no longer get the type of lights that we had on our tree; but, we had to buy much smaller bulbs that were "eco-friendly". Well, we have a lot of lights on our tree, but they are not very bright and make it hard to see the ornaments. But, the kicker was that I could no longer plug in my lighted ornaments because the ornament plug no longer fit into the light fixture. So, no more Ka-Pah from Worf, or Spock wishing me a Happy Holiday, and to Live Long and Prosper.

It may not seem like a tragedy; but, this was part of the tradition at our home, and all I want is to buy the type of lights that I have always used. If other people wanted to buy the "eco-friendly" lights, go right ahead; but, why do I have to buy something that doesn't work as well just because a few idiots have decided that no one should use what they consider to be excess energy.

My husband found somewhere where this had changed in 2001, so I really should have been aware; but, somehow missed it. Still, aggravating.

Does anyone know if this ban includes the weather proof outdoor flood lights?
I once tried a florescent flood on our motion detector that lights up our driveway and it proved to be useless.

When you or anybody gets something stolen because curlies don’t set off time-proven security systems properly, you need to file a claim.

I went to bed and plain forgot to mention RICO and Anti-trust.
The lawsuits of unintended consequences of consequences not even thought about boggle the mind.

What does any of this have to with SAD? I was disputing your poor medical knowledge, nothing else.

You said, “ Well, guess what. You are likely to be diagnosed with Seasonal Affectation Disorder (millions of Americans are afflicted by it, particularly in the short-day states) aka SAD, and your physician can prescribe incandescent lights to keep your spirits up.”

I corrected you, and now you’re going on about heating pumps and water wells, as though they are somehow related.

>When your great great grandfather died, did he have a closet full of buggy whips?<

Buggy whips don’t shatter nor do they contaminate the area in which they shatter with mercury.

Neither do Halogen lights nor do LED’s.

I don’t agree with outlawing them either, but get with the program, they are not cheaper in any way whatsoever.

>Not saying the incandescents should be banned,
But they were.

That’s the problem.

Throw them all out in ‘12.<

100 watt incandescents will simply not be sold in stores after 2012, they’re not banned to possess.

Or, do you mean throw all the nitwit politicians who think up such idiotic laws?

Sorry, I think I’ll keep lighting my home the way I see fit. You can do as you will, it doesn’t affect me in any way whatsoever. I have other uses for 100 watt bulbs besides light. They help keep animals warm, not to mention they are useful in preventing water pipes from freezing and bursting.

Not the smart way to do it but we should have the right to be stubborn.

I think I’ll put an outhouse in my back yard.

Go for it. When your local board of health shows up on your doorstep, don’t be surprised ;D

On January 1, 2012 Americans will no longer be able to buy 100-watt Edison light bulbs. Please sign our SAVE the Edison Light Bulb petition today!

http://www.eagleforum.org/petitions/save-the-edison-light-bulb.html

Unless Congress takes action to repeal the so-called “efficiency standards” enacted under a liberal Congress, it will be illegal to sell the 100-watt incandescent light bulb. Help us save the Edison light bulb by signing the petition on this page
