Trump Debate a Joke? A Reality Show? Beneath Office of President?
Maggie's Notebook ^ | 12-6-11 | Maggie@MaggiesNotebook

I don't think so. Last night on the Fox Panel, Donald Trump was roundly flogged for moderating a debate with GOP Presidential candidates. The complaints were that Trump might still run himself, Trump is not a journalist, a Trump debate is nothing more than a reality show, it's a joke and beneath the office of the Presidency (that from Ron Paul). Charles Krauthammer joined in and agreed. Karl Rove has expressed similar opinions. Krauthammer, Rove and other elitists need to get over themselves. True Conservative members of any Tea Party can do as well as any "journalist," and a Trump debate isn't a reality show until it's over and the audience decides it is a joke.

The jokes are the early debates moderated by various progressive, partisan hacks. Most 'journalists' are a joke, in my opinion. Sheeeesh! I am sick of these establishment efforts to elect Mitt Romney, and that's what this is about. I'm still listening to the candidates. I'm still making up my mind, because the two candidates I know without a doubt, will do the job, may be out of the running. I want to hear these debates, and Trump will ask some hard questions.  If Trump's position is wrong, or unpopular, so be it, but he's not a joke. If he doesn't do a good and honorable job, if his questions are inane, if no one shows up to debate, if there is no audience, so be it, but as Nancy Pelousy (hat tip to NiceDeb) indicated, you have to read or see something to know what's in it, or what the end result will be.

Shame on Charles Krauthammer and Karl Rove. Talk your guy up if you want to, but stop the condescending bitching.

The republican party should be ashamed of themselves. Why don’t they just hold a minstrel show if they insist on being thought of as a bunch of clowns?

How about the following debates:
1) A debate co-moderated by the CEO’s of the 3 largest US ememployers.

2) A debate on healthcare in front of a panel of practicing Doctors.

3) A debate on social issues moderated by... oh wait, I could totally care less about that. Debate not needed.

4) A debate on conservative policy and the candidates positions, hosted by Mark Levin.

Oh, I forgot one more:

5) A debate on Governmental fiscal responsibility in front of a panel of the top 5 tax paying individuals in this country.

Since Trump also runs the Miss Universe pageant, Newt must assume the debate will include a swimsuit portion. Here he is getting a good tan in preparation.

It’s no moreso a joke than the other debates (save for maybe the Huckabee forum and the Newt/Cain Lincoln/Douglas one).

Trump is more “serious” than Jim Cramer.

"Shame on Charles Krauthammer..."

Give me a break. He's an editorialist giving his opinion, and as usual he happens to be correct. I don't understand why people have to go kiss Donald Trump's ring, much less participate in his self-aggrandizing attempt to become a king-maker; we would go crazy if Soros held court in a similarly ostentatious fashion. Trump isn't even a conservative, he's a "Trumpist" near as I can tell - all Donald, all the time. Watching he and Gingrich together hold their little press conference was like watching the collision of two supernovas of ego; utterly obnoxious.

I was seriously considering Gingrich, but I've now been reminded that along with his ideas, you get his ego and personality. Quite beyond the fact that he looks old, fat and positively disheveled - especially for a guy with a $500,000 credit line at Tiffany - the lack of anything approaching humility is a terrible turn-off.

First of all, I don't think I want the mouth breathers who find any kind of value in “reality television” to be a factor in the election of the next president; secondly, if those interested in political discussion haven't had ample opportunity to learn about the candidates up until now, and that Donald Trump somehow represents their only conduit for that information, this nation has greater troubles than I can imagine; lastly, the idea that Trump can serve as some sort of unbiased arbiter when his ONLY interest is in lining his pockets should completely and irrevocably exclude him from that role.

...but the media has a dream:

After the Reality Debate on the once bankrupt ION, Trump will ascend to the top of Trump Tower to contemplate in solitude his choice for the Republican Party.

The country will hold their collective breaths as they await his exalted decision. The media press will be all buzzing with anticipation and whispering to each other...is he still up there, when is he coming down, how long before we hear his words?

Then after days and days of media speculation and nervous waiting they receive the word...THE DONALD IS COMING DOWN...THE DONALD IS COMING DOWN!!!

The media hoards rush to the Trump Tower elevators and watch as the elevator slowly descends to the bottom floor and slowly opens revealing a Donald they have never seen before.

His yards of carefully coiffed hair is now pure white, he emits a almost spiritual glow and is dressed in a flowing robe.

Somberly, he hands envelopes to all the clambering media, inside is one name...Mitt Romney.

The doors close and the Donald ascends back to the top of his tower to prepare for his next season as host of Apprentice on NBC.

Also worth pondering:

I’m not sayin’ Trump has a vested interest in promoting this just because ION announced this within days of Trumps Reality Debate promotion but then again he loves promoting stuff.

Not going on the Donald Trump Dog & Pony Show isn’t going to cost anyone the election.

Since I assume this election will be determined the same way they have in the past, I beg to differ.

Its about VOTES. And like it or not, those you call 'mouth breathers' vote in large numbers. 3/4 of the battle is getting them to pay attention before election day.

Regardless of how I personally feel about pop culture I'd rather these people give their votes to someone besides the Kenyan Klown, and that means they a) recognize the names & faces of the alternatives, at the very least; and b) have an idea, however vague, of the candidates general ideological tilt.

The debate is supposed to be on the ION network. I don’t know how many people he expects to be in the viewing audience.

There’s nothing wrong with Trump moderating a debate. He wants to know about trade with China and India. How are we going to deal with OPEC? Put the questions out there and let’s see what candidates have to say. I’ll watch it because you never know when you’ll catch an interesting fact.

You’ve got something important there... and in the right order. Start with the CEO’s and move right along to the doctors. It would be an eye-opener for the country, the GOP AND ‘Occupy’ types...

You think Trump cares if he has anything on Obama? He can say what he wants — he’s The Donald.

A Trump debate format would be of Trump, by Trump and for Trump and little else.

“You think Trump cares if he has anything on Obama?”

Yes. It is Marketing 101 and Accounting 101

Most of Trump's net worth is based on an “intangible asset” which is his brand name, “Trump.”

How people feel about that brand and what they associate with the brand and thus the value of the brand would be undermined if Trump were to be perceived as tainted by dishonesty, foolishness or stupidity by the purchasers of products with his brand.

Good point, although a lot of people managed to find Monk there. Maybe it will live-stream somewhere.
