My Time at Walmart: Why We Need Serious Welfare Reform
TheCollegeConservative ^ | 12/13/2011 | Christine Rouselle

During the 2010 and 2011 summers, I was a cashier at Wal-Mart #1788 in Scarborough, Maine. I spent hours upon hours toiling away at a register, scanning, bagging, and dealing with questionable clientele. These were all expected parts of the job, and I was okay with it. What I didn’t expect to be part of my job at Wal-Mart was to witness massive amounts of welfare fraud and abuse.

My brother, who grew up in one of the richest zip codes in the US, is college educated and has never had a job thanks to the California welfare system. California is paying for his 3 bedroom apt and feeding his 3 children. Here is the kicker...California is also paying to feed their dog, which is a 200 lb. mastiff.

If you want to reform the system, here’s how:
All able bodied people receiving welfare are mandated to show up at the welfare office a minimum of three days a week to clock in at nine and clock out at three.
All able bodied people receiving welfare MUST put in a minimum of 40 hours per month doing community service.
Further, revoke the license of any doctors who are complicit in giving false diagnosis’ for the purpose of receiving welfare/disability.
After 2 children, welfare benefits max out.
All welfare recipients must pass drug tests.
All monies allotted for the sole purpose of food go to STAPLE ITEMS ONLY....did I miss anything?

A lot of FReepers who should know better consider folks on Social Security (that they paid for all their working lives) to be on the dole, so I take their comments with a great deal of salt. I gave up asking if they included such people in their calculus, because there’s no explaining “insurance” to them. Ever heard that over 50% of the population is on welfare? SS beneficiaries are counted in that number.

Just as pig-headed as liberals sometimes.

The little shop in my town that I visit once a week has had a "foodstamp machine broken" sign on the door since he opened up the joint.

He just doesn't want the hassle.

Local pizza stop, just got my treat for the next two weeks, a 6 buck pizza. EBT of course accepted.

If I run a business, it will have NO EBT sign.

-Make luxury and non-food items like liquor and steak not available with WIC, EBT, and the like. If you attempt to buy them, you lose them immediately. If you want to buy champagne and lobster, get a frigging job.

-Make EBT benefits a finite resource: unless you have a permanent disablity, they run out. Period.

-Quadruple the fines for EBT-for-cash fraud, and include mandatory prison time if convicted.

-If an investigation finds you have been having children specifically to increase your EBT benefits, you lose the benefits.

I received the following in an email:

“This was written by a 21 yr old woman who gets it. It’s her future she’s worried about and this is how she feels about the social welfare big government state that she’s being forced to live in! These solutions are just common sense in her opinion.

This was in the Waco Tribune Herald, Waco , TX Nov 18, 2010

Put me in charge . . .

Put me in charge of food stamps. I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, or smoke, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your “home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good..”

Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules.. Before you say that this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self esteem,” consider that it wasn’t that long ago that taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

AND While you are on Gov’t subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov’t welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.”

Gabriella Hoffman is a senior at UC-San Diego who balances life as a student and writes about herself in the third person.

She pimps her blog on various sites hoping to get enough blog hits to afford a semblance of relevance.

...I’m not saying anyone on EBT shouldn’t be able to buy a cake mix for their kid on his or her b’day

To play Devil's Advocate, I'd say that. :-) No cake mix. BUT, they can buy milk, flour, eggs, sugar, etc etc etc and MAKE a cake. But then again, I'm a big meanie.

And I liked your comments on WIC. My Mom used to work in HHS in several different locations. She says that - in her experience - about 3 out of 4 people are gaming the system to one extent or another. BUT - she also said that WIC was one of the few programs that actually did some good. The money typically got into the hands of the correct people, and was spent on its originally intended purpose.

Isn’t it odd that we live in a time when the government wants to tell us what to eat and drink and how much we should weigh, but refuses to intervene in managing welfare handouts in such a way as to prevent abuse and misuse of government money? If they’re hungry, let’s give them food; if they’re in need of clothing, let’s give them clothes. If we give them money, they’ll buy neither.

I would have to say that’s the first post I’ve ever read of yours that had a ring of “genuine” to it.
Refreshing.

Stay far away from political power. Please.

You’re doing us more harm than good.

Your constant baiting people for a solution shows you have none and you have no real interest in solving a problem. Troll.

Any retailer who sells a product on a government give away card which should not be purchased with that card should be fined 100x the cost of each and every item.

This is theft from those of us who have worked all our lives only to have a significant portion of that work stolen from us and given to people who do not deserve a penny.

There must be tighter controls over OUR money (it is not the governments money but OURS) and generational welfare is theft pure and simple. In our PC culture anyone who dares complain is immediately given a race card.

If someone is physically unable to work then I would gladly give to a charity to assure they have the essentials of life but don’t for a second play the game you are attempting to play and imply there is no solution. How many time have you read Saul Alinsky? Seems you are quite familiar with the vile pukes tactics.

Well, you post here to afford yourself a semblance of relevance, so you shouldn’t have a problem with it. Beside that, she is better looking than you.
