Did Greg Gutfeld Ace His O’Reilly Factor Anchoring Task? (Ted Baxter retiring?)

Fox News’s Greg Gutfeld tackled the often vexing world of prime time on Tuesday when he tried to fill some big shoes hosting Fox News’s top-ranked show The O’Reilly Factor. It was an equal-parts bold and odd choice, putting the network’s oft-times unpredictable, distinctly snarky and libertarian-minded funnyman as replacement host of the Fox News flagship program. But would Gutfeld measure as O’Reilly’s FNC tent-pole?

Gutfeld handled the reins of hosting The Factor with aplomb, putting his quick-hit comedic commentary aside just enough to fit in on O’Reilly’s self-described “traditionalist” program. At several points during last night’s show, the Red Eye host channeled O’Reilly’s trademark stone-faced gravitas, for example a point made about youth violence. “I think most of this violence happens because it can. And we have become more permissive and I think, parents and people are scared to confront kids because they fear they are going to get hurt or sued,” Gutfeld said in reference to the fights that broke out at the Mall of America. “You know, if you are on a subway, something is happening, you stay away from it because you don’t want to be bothered. One of these days you are going to have to step in.”

In that moment, Gutfeld quite nearly perfectly captured the O’Reilly ethos of personal responsibility, and communicated it very succinctly. But all the while, he was still very much doing his own thing.

Gutfeld’s turn at anchoring a prime time show was remarkable in that he is so often cast as the face of the network’s “continued shift on cable to talk about the news and away from actual news reports” — as the New York Times‘s Brian Stelter had described The Five.

In his turn as prime-time anchor, Gutfeld showed he was quite competent and prepared to take the driver seat in the high-stakes O’Reilly slot and performed well in a hard news capacity. With a sharp performance Tuesday, Fox News higher-ups undoubtedly took notice.

Watch several clips from Gutfeld’s command performance as Bill O’Reilly’s fill-in below via Fox News:

"....the O'Reilly ethos of personal responsibility...."

BOR has this ethos for everyone but himself. His ethos is that of personal irresponsibility.

He is a weasel and waffler without the abiding ingrained precepts found in those who support the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Rule of Law.

To cut to the chase, here's example of his unprincipled schtick...."Is Obama bent on destroying this country?....well, some of his policies are somewhat destructive in some folks views in some stratums of society in some areas of the country, BUT................................................................................no, I don't think he's purposefully bent on destroying this country, and he probably is actually a pretty nice guy and a good American".

Or:

"Is Obama a socialist or a marxist?.....no, I wouldn't say that. He's far left, that's for sure. HOWEVER.............................................................................................................................I don't think he's a socialist or marxist, he probably is actually a pretty nice guy and a good American. By the way, go to 'BORshill.com' which is not the same as 'BORfencestraddler.com' for my latest line of merchandise, tickets for my concerts with Miller, and a price list for my latest books....plus we have an new front door mat with 'Juan Williams Sleeps Here' on it......."

BOR's "ethos of personal responsibility" was also evident in his quick and low-key payoff to the suing woman who said he had regular phone sex with her.

He also never bothered to research what FR really is before he publicly attacked this web site with lies and unfounded allegations. But, then, as a populist, statist bloviator, he instinctively hates true conservatives. He's always using the leftist tool of moral-equivalency in placing conservatives on the "far right fringe" on the same level with the radicals on the "far left fringe" of the political spectrum. He does this all the time.

I wish Greg Gutfeld would have been free to really satirize O'Reilly while subbing for him, but, of course, he couldn't. I bet it would have been devastatingly hilarious to see the pompous ass harpooned as only the puckish Gutfeld could do.

OTOH, poor O'R can't suddenly become self-aware. He's riding on old ratings - a half dead horse. When is his contract UP?
Roger Ailes has got a tired tiger by the tail.
O'R’s viewers are no longer TeaParty types, but the OWSers,
who think O'R is enlightened.
Message to Roger: the TeaPartiers buy more ‘soap’, and there are more of us.

O’Reilly actually wished Gutfeld a “Happy Hanukka”, to which Gutfeld replied, “I’M Catholic! I was an altar boy!”

O’Reilly, instead of apologizing, tried to make a joke and changed the subject. What a maroon.

So you won’t watch FOX because they won’t boost your chosen candidate? That’s a bit short sighted, IMHO. If you want to talk about mean-spirited attacks on Republicans, check MSNBC for a couple of minutes. I just watch that channel when I want to get mad.

Nope. That’s not it. Neutrality would be just fine.

What I object to is the hatchet job they did and I presume are still doing on Newt. For the last couple of weeks when I was still watching Fox every show had a bash Newt segment. They brought out their big guns, Dr. K, Brit Hume, Bret Baier, Fred Barnes, Ann Coulter and many others I’m sure to wield the hatchet. It was MSNBC on steroids and it just burned me out with Fox.

Love Gutfeld, but he really doesn't have the mass appeal.

It's the same with other late night comedians who move up to earlier slots: either they make their act blander to please that mass audience and lose the "attitude" one liked about them to begin with, or they keep their edge and don't make headway with the mass public.
