Chevy Volt fire probe is closed, NHTSA says

U.S. safety regulators said Friday that they've closed an eight-week investigation into the Chevrolet Volt, concluding that the plug-in hybrid's battery doesn't pose a significant fire risk following a crash.

In a statement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it "does not believe that Chevy Volts or other electric vehicles pose a greater risk of fire than gasoline-powered vehicles."

The agency said that modifications intended to reinforce the Volt's 435-pound lithium-ion battery pack that General Motors announced on Jan. 5 should "reduce the potential" of the pack catching fire in the days or weeks following a crash.

Hmmm. Eight weeks for the Obama administration to clear the Chevy Volt (old sparky) but still no decision on the the Keystone Pipeline after more than three years.

To give people an idea of just what a bomb the Volt is, the following is true:

1) Liberal driver has accident that fires off Air-Bag
2) On-Star reports the accident to a GM dispatch center
3) GM IMMEDIATELY sends a “rapid response” team to the scene of the accident to discharge the battery, no doubt with special equipment and tools.

The problem is that it’s simply not possible to expect first responders to be able defuse a Volt after an accident without killing themselves.

When the government did their crash testing I suspect that On-Star was disabled - or if the dispatch team showed up, the testers told them to take a hike. But the fuses were lit, and eventually worked their way up to the battery set.

... And how long did the investigation last for the Toyota acceleration claims ? More than enough effort was put in to try and destroy that company.

These guys are ridiculous.

If they are no higher risk than gasoline vehicles - then why are they bursting into flames?

In government speak - what they really mean is “when all safety precautions are followed correctly, etc - THEN they are no higher risk.” -

Then - they include all kinds of special things that no one does - in their list of “safety precautions”.

We have yet to hear from Holder's Inspector General as to who signed off on Fast and Furious. The cover-up investigation is almost a year old.

“Closed” is purely politically motivated....the longer it stays ‘open’ the more it makes this current idiot-ridden administration look like, well, a band of idiots working around and within political and ideological constraints, motivations and agendas. This had been Toyota, for example, this would be hardly ‘closed,” huh? =.=

***If they are no higher risk than gasoline vehicles - then why are they bursting into flames?****

Maybe the buyers have discovered that the VOLT is a high dollar lemon, and are finding ways to set them on fire for insurance purposes.

True! Even if Volts all caught fire spontaneously, the total risk would still be less than for gasoline powered vehicles because nobody wants, needs or buys them!

I recall a movie (I believe Stalag 17) showing a POW who has been in a prison camp a year gets a letter from his wife stating she had just delivered his 7 lb son. He just sites there exclaiming, “I believe it! I believe it!”
