Dover, TN - It has happened again - a companion dog has been shot and killed by the police.

In this case, the dog's name was Girl - she was a German shepherd who was a constant companion to 73 yr-old Blanks "Buddy" Phippen.

Back on January 21, Buddy and Girl were sitting in their front yard when a car crashed into a nearby utility pole.

From this point on, details become a bit muddy.

No cop should have the right to carry a gun until spending 2 straight years with the K-9 unit.

I don’t when it began but it is against Federal law for U.S. mail carriers to carry firearms.

Though it is unclear in the news report, it appears that Buddy left, but his dog, "Girl" stayed behind.

No, a cop killed the dog. Read the story.

Good advice, take it.

From the story it seems the owner was ordered to leave, then forced to watch, and our dog murdering hero figured he could tell any monsense story he wished since it was his word against a doddering old man's.

May the sky refuse to stand over them. May the earth refuse to support them. May their steps be confused, may their insides be twisted. May they do nothing in secret that is not broadcast from the rooftops, may their weapons betray them. With a free will for the good of all, may it be.

This is happening too often and in too many different places.

My guess is the Police Training Academies are instructing their students to shoot any dog which “might” be aggressive in any police action they are involved in.

Add all of this to the many cases where cops and other law-enforcement personnel have burst into the WORNG house and terrified, abused, and harassed the WRONG people and destroyed private property needlessly, and it points to the fact that the cops can no longer be relied upon to police themselves.

The profession of law enforcement has morphed into a situation where the average cop has become just another union employee - with a gun - and a license to act irresponsibly.

Further, I think we need an ongoing investigation into exactly what cops are taught to do in situations like these at police academies.

We also need civilian review boards to investigate these situations. Cops can't be relied upon to investigate their own anymore than any other sector of government can.

While we are at it, we need some monitoring of exactly what and how kids are taught in the public school system particularly with respect to American and western history.

It's always been the law that USPS employees can carry firearms only if ordered to do so.

When it came to Post Office Department employees, there was the same law and I don't know when it was passed.

What you have to remember in this is that USPS employees aren't on duty 24/7. They get some free time and if they want to do some target shooting with a bad dog nobody is going to complain.

UPS and my dog:
My Yorkie is about 3.5 lbs. and wears a pink bow on top of her head. When the UPS lady comes to my door, I hand her the puppy so she won’t charge out the door, and take my package inside. She holds her and plays with her until I come back to get her.

The UPS lady loves my dog.

About this dog that was shot: Why did the cop have to kill her four times? Four shots. He meant to absolutely kill her not just stop her.

Of course, I wouldn’t have left my dog out there, would have taken her with me when I left.

We read that the cop was not shooting blanks. [sorry, I can’t help myself!]

The cop killed the dog and so did the owner. Do you know the concept of suicide by cop? How is this all that different? The owner walked away leaving the dog stressed in a dangerous situation with police. And we all know that police shoot first with dogs. If the owner wanted the dog to live, he should have put it indoors.

LOL Well, I don't suppose many carriers would come around in their off hours to shoot a problem dog on their route but I suppose, as well, that it does happen.

I used to be married to a USPS rural route carrier and she was not allowed to carry nor was anyone else in her office. She would have liked to, and I would have liked for her to, but it wasn't due to dogs that we did. I think she gave treats to dogs to win them over.

They issued her a rather pansyass version of pepper spray but I don't recall any incidence of her having to use it. As I'm sure you are well aware mail carriers, particularly rural carriers, are rather vulnerable to attack. Primarily from two-legged dogs.

WTH is going on with cops!? Has this always happened, but we're just hearing about it now?

During Christmas celebrations my niece's boyfriend (a cop) walked cautiously into the room and my Border Collie gave out an 'alarm' bark at him but not anybody else. He must of picked-up on his uneasiness and defense mode because I sure did.

Are cops being trained to fear all dogs or something?

Just Chill Out Coppers!

The owner likely had no idea that any cop would (claim to) be terrified of a gentle house pet.

It is the cop’s responsibility to resign from the force since he clearly lacks the mental capacity to act as a peace officer, not the owner’s responsibility to guess all scenarios that are (to his mind) preposterous.

I’m sure had you asked the man before this incident if some cops shot house pets, he would have told you the very idea was crazy.

These incidents need to stop. What are conservative police officers doing to get these bad cops off the force?
