VANITY: FR -- slightly ahead of its time?
my beady little brain | Feb 11, 2012 | HTRN

Posted on 02/10/2012 10:28:46 PM PST by HiTech RedNeck

It's been several weeks, I think, and the timestamp which gets put on my postings (and other fresh postings) seems to be about ten minutes or so ahead of the actual time. This can't be a time zone issue. What gives? Or is Illinois so retarded that even all its clocks are slow?

The standard physics explanation is that we're so cool that we're ahead of everyone else in the world.

There some server issue which makes it impractical to walk the clocks back, even by slowing it in micro-increments until it has gotten back in coordination?

Well, it’s leap year and we have to add a whole day at the end of the month, so maybe things could get sync’d up then.

The servers are actually housed on a satellite that orbits the Earth. After so many years up in space and with its speed, it is now roughly 10 minutes into the future. This also means that it receives your posts 10 minutes before you’ve actually made them.

All modern computers already know how to do leap day... JR won’t have to go tell them to do that. What they don’t know, unless they link to a time server on the internet, is how to keep tied to actual GMT. If FR is just for yacking that’s one thing, but if some event of national interest happens that is unfolding in real time, it would be nice to see the actual time on things like “well, the sixth earthquake shock in this New Madrid Fault series that was 8 on the Richter scale just hit Chicago.”

Ah, the days of wearing suits and ties, rather than tee shirts and mountain boots (in case a mountain should spring up suddenly), in the machine room.
