Time for Newt to Do the Honorable Thing [First NRO, now American Spectator Calls Him To Withdraw]

Time for Newt to Do the Honorable Thing By DAVID CATRON on 2.14.12

Gingrich can perform one last service for the GOP, drop out and endorse Santorum.

About a week after his surprising victory in the South Carolina primary, Newt Gingrich did an interview with ABC News, most of which he devoted to complaints about the tactics Mitt Romney was using against him in Florida: "We have not been as effective in telling the truth as he has been in running ads… which have had to be pulled because they were so inaccurate." His most notable remark, however, was a thinly veiled hint that Rick Santorum, who at that time had failed to gain any momentum from his caucus win in Iowa, should drop out of the race for the GOP presidential nomination: "The conservatives clearly are rejecting Romney. He is nowhere near getting a majority.… The fact is, when you combine the Santorum vote and the Gingrich vote... the conservative combined would clearly beat Romney."

Santorum failed to heed the former Speaker's suggestion, of course, and it's unlikely that he regrets that decision. He has since won three more upset victories in Missouri, Colorado, and Minnesota. Santorum now ranks second in delegates and trounces Mitt Romney in the latest national survey conducted by Public Policy Polling (PPP): "Rick Santorum has opened up a wide lead in PPP's newest national poll. He's at 38% to 23% for Mitt Romney, 17% for Newt Gingrich, and 13% for Ron Paul." PPP has thus anointed Santorum the "consensus conservative candidate."

Meanwhile, Gingrich has floundered. He has not merely failed to add any fresh victories to his single South Carolina win, his showings in the most recent state contests correspond with the percentage he received in the PPP poll.

That's Newt Gingrich's decision, in consultation with his Creator and his families, not mine.

Furthermore, all I want to concentrate on now is being positive, kicking Romney's ass (figuratively speaking), and racking up as many states and delegates into the "Game On! / Fear The Vest" camp's (Sen. Rick Santorum) column as possible, heading into Tampa. Furthermore, we need an airtight, tough, Conservative, Tea Party-flavored GOP 2012 Convention Platform. I assume the drafting is being done as we talk over at the RNC. I bet they are screwing it up. We are going to have do do all kinds of re-writes in Platform Committee meetings with Santorum as the standard bearer. Job One.

Who’s the “Mike Huckabee” of the 2012 election? Staying in long enough to screw any chances of even a semi-conservative getting the nod? Is it Newt or Santorum?

I think the spoiler is Newt.

By staying in, he makes Santorum a better candidate.

Who did Huckabee keep from being nominated?

Romney’s group is running negative ads in Ohio non-stop, against Newt. Losing Gingrich would be a devastating blow to this country and I pray people take the time to realize the depth of hs man.

I am a Santorum backer and feel that Newt should stay in at least until Michigan. If Rick carries Michigan after withstanding Romney's negative campaign there (believe me it will happen), then I think it is time for Newt to consider getting out. If not then, certainly after Super Tuesday if Newt cannot consolidate the South as a stronghold.

Newt will win Georgia and Texas.

Newt is not going to withdraw. He has Todd Palin, Chuck Norris, Fred Thompson, Dick Cheney, Herman Cain and stealth Sarah Palin campaigning for him.

Those listed above are Conservatives.

Newt for the WIN !!! Santorum could possibly be VP. But if Rick S continues to attack Newt, he should not be VP.

Rick is disgusting when he attacks Newt. Dick Cheney supports Newt.

That’s what I was thinking. I wouldn’t be disappointed and I wouldn’t care which one was at the top. I just don’t want Romney who is Obama-lite.....AND to show the establishment Republicans that we can pick our own candidate. I just bet that 4 years ago they told Mittens that it was McLame’s turn and this time he would get the nomination.....I just bet it happened like so many times before. Screw them!!

That was before Newt was tanking. He’s un-favorability readings are now in the cellar, momentum slowed to a halt, money all but dried up, and leading conservative publications demanding that he withdraws from the race. And in some national polls he’s standing down to 11%. Time to wake up to the new reality.

"makes Santorum a better candidate." Wait until Santorum and his big government will start pocking their noses into your bedroom...

Pro-big government Santorum in 2005: “they have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do. Government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulation low and that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues, you know, people should do whatever they want. Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world, and I think most conservatives understand that individuals can’t go it alone...”

I believe in 1976 that Reagan lost 8 of the first 9 races against Ford. There were calls for Reagan to drop out. He held firm, started winning and came to within about 60 delegates of defeating Ford.

American Spectator can bug off.
