Representative Clel Baudler (R-58) and Iowa Gun Owners Executive Director Aaron Dorr were interviewed on WHO Radio this morning, hosted by Jan Mickelson. This was an opportunity for Rep. Baudler to explain his position on the current state of firearms legislation in Iowa.
It was an ugly conversation, if you are someone who believes in the ability to exercise your rights freely without government intervention. Rep. Baudler unequivocally stated the following:
* The ability for an Iowan to carry a firearm must be tempered with public safety. He does not want Iowa to be a place where “any schizophrenic can carry a gun.”
* He believes that HF 2114 with the amendment that continues to prohibit firearms, ammunition, and firearms accessories in city halls, courthouses, and hospitals is a good bill. Furthermore, because of the statement made by Justice Scalia in the 2008 Heller case stating that the Second Amendment does not provide the right to carry anywhere and at anytime, the restrictions provided in HF 2114 are justified and act in the best interests of public safety. Hospitals and courthouses are “emotionally charged” places, and it would be best to keep firearms out of those locations, according to him.
* He believes that Iowa is where it needs to be, today, with firearms laws. Any proposed changes that will further loosen firearms legislation will be held up in his committee and not see the light of day, as there is no need to move Iowa forward with less restrictions. The citizens are just not ready for that. Constitutional carry, suppressors, automatic weapons, repeal of the Permit to Acquire, total preemption, all of these concepts are just too advanced for Iowans to handle.
* He believes that we have a good system now, and there is no need to change it.
* He accused Aaron Dorr of being against any change that would move Iowa's firearms laws forward, as it would keep him from being able to collect $35 from his members.
This is totally unbelievable. This man holds a seat on the NRA's Board of Directors, and he pretends to be a friend of gun owners. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I will never do so again.
For gun owners in Iowa, it is now clear that this legislator is an enemy. The NRA would do well to review their support of this anti-rights legislator, and I can guarantee that this NRA Life Member will never, ever vote for him to retain his seat on the Board. In fact, I will do everything in my power to make sure that this very conversation is fresh when his seat comes up for a vote. There are so many different ways he could have explained his actions, but he came out swinging and totally trashed your right to carry a firearm.
I will post a link to the podcast when Jan puts it up later today. In the meantime, Iowans, the enemy has made himself known. If you ever want to work on restoring the firearms rights that government has restricted over the years, removing Rep. Baudler from the Iowa House of Representatives needs to be a priority. Not just removal from the House Public Safety Committee, but removal from his seat in the legislature. He has made it clear that he does not care what the citizens want, he only wants what he believes is best for Iowa.
And that my friends is a true mark of a tyrant.

Simple solution can be found the next time he runs for office. No need to get panties in a wad. Just have some patience.
I severed ties with the NRA when they supported Harry Reid in 2010 re-election campaign citing him as a gun rights supporter. The NRA must be compromised because gun rights cannot stand alone when Harry finally succeeds in taking all our other rights away.
What we need is another government agency established which will evaluate the mental health of every person in the US -male, femalle, inbetween, citizen, non-citizen. After passing the government test they may own a weapon for a stated length of time. Then they have to be retested. /s
Perhaps what should be looked at is the concept of citizen, free man, government, etc.
The phrase “emotionally charged” places reminded me of a rather odd German law, in which, under any circumstances with both police and paramedic involvement, if a person is belligerent, overly emotional, or even distraught to the point of being uncommunicative, the police may direct the paramedics to administer to them, voluntarily or not, a shot of Valium. (Unless they are obviously already intoxicated.)
The interesting thing about Valium is that one can neither maintain, nor achieve, any strong emotional action or reaction while under its influence. It will rapidly make an angry and aggressive person, or someone overcome with terrible shock and sadness, etc., calm and collected.
This being common knowledge, whenever there are such situations, such as car accidents, etc., Germans become very calm, friendly and polite.
Importantly, in the US, a profusion of guns can have a similar effect. People really think twice about becoming overly emotional, even in “emotionally charged” places.
