A significant portion of such a tax ultimately may land on oil producers, which means it cuts back on supply and exploration...

BS. The demand for gasoline is very inelastic, hence any shift in the supply curve in an attempt to pass the tax along will fall disproportionately higher on the consumer. Gees...and this guy's a Harvard Ph.D.?

I get it. It’s one of those “the American people are undertaxed” arguments. It really doesn’t look that way from my side of things. It looks to me like I’m being taxed way too much by local, state, and federal goverments that probably piss away about a third of the revenues on graft and waste. So I have a suggestion for the big-shot Harvard economics professor: come up with a way to take care of government needs that doesn’t involve taking more bread from my children’s mouths or making me more a slave of the state than I already am.
