‘I Think You Have to Be Realistic’: Gingrich Calls Romney ‘The Most Likely Republican Nominee’
The Blaze ^ | April 98 2012 | Madeliene Morganstern

GOP presidential contender Newt Gingrich acknowledged Sunday that rival Mitt Romney is most likely to come away with the party’s nomination, saying he would support him if he does.

“I think you have to be realistic,“ the former House Speaker said about his own struggling campaign on ”Fox News Sunday” according to Politico. “Given the size of [Romney's] organization, given the number of primaries he’s won, he is far and away the most likely Republican nominee.”

At 660 delegates, the former Massachusetts governor has more than half the delegates needed to clinch the nomination. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has 281 and Gingrich has 135.

“If he does get to 1,144 delegates, I’ll support him,” Gingrich said.

It’s a different tone for Gingrich, who has vowed to remain in the race through the Republican National Convention this summer. Saying the “primary goal of the entire Republican Party has to be to defeat Barack Obama,“ Gingrich indicated he would take on a surrogate role to ”do everything I can this fall to help [Romney] beat Obama.”

Gingrich, whose campaign saw several surges but has limped along since Super Tuesday, said he has “no regrets” about his decision to run but said it turned out to be “much harder” than he thought it would be.

“I’m glad I did this. For me it was important as a citizen to try to do some very important things to try to bring new ideas and new approach,” he said. “It was the right for me to do in both my life and where I thought the country was.”

So, does this mean that Gingrich was the stalking horse for Romney, as many claimed Santorum was? Just asking...

That’s what I’m wondering. Is Gingrich a shill for the RP house, splitting the conservative vote so that lib Romney gets the nomination.

Wow, with Romney as president and Gingrich as VP, we would get an environmental bill that would basically abolish business in the United States. It would make the proposed Cap & Trade bill look pro-business.

“If he does get to 1,144 delegates, I’ll support him,” Gingrich said.

I wish I could say the same, however I am a true conservative with conviction.

No, and neither was Santorum. Contrary to the fevered imaginings of many here, there is no deep, dark conspiracy to make Romney the nominee. All along he's had the best funding and organization, as well as the benefit and experience of having run before.

It's time for many conservatives to fish or cut bait. Romney will be the Republican nominee. In November only Obama or Romney will have a chance to win the presidency. You want four more years of Obama? Then you know what to do. All the blah, blah, blah between now and then doesn't mean squat.

Was a great interview. Newt is staying in, mostly to push the big issues he cares about. But he is absolutely ABO and made that absolutely clear.

Newt Gingrich has behaved like a true patriot in this campaign. He had enormous odds against him and managed to get his message out on the real American culture from our founding days to the terrible policies and poor leadership that got us to where we are as a nation today.

In spite of being attacked horribly by the GOP establishment, Romney gang and press on that black Thursday before the Florida Primary, Newt never quit. He now puts America’s interests first and will do his part to unite the party to defeat Obama. There are a lot worse people out there than Newt Gingrich.

His money brought him the process of the destruction of Herman Cain and the removal of Sarah Palin from consideration... and Bachmann... and he was part of that attack on the right from the day mccain lost... mitt conspired with Secretaries of State to keep competition off the ballot in certain states and he bought endorsements from every high level republican wishing to sell their endorsement (through their PACS).

mitt may be the nominee but no one has the right to paint him as anything but exactly who and what he is. It is one thing to vote for mitt... I understand how some people still think this nominee was just fate... but it is quite another thing to overlook how evil and progressive mitt is.

and the removal of Sarah Palin from consideration

This alone marks you as not having a clue. In any case, as I said, only two men will have a chance to be elected president in November. If you want Obama reelected, you know what to do. All the blah, blah, blah between now and then doesn't mean squat. Keep hating on Romney if it makes your spleen feel better. I don't care.

I believe Obama will be reelected precisely because there are enough people like you out and about to ensure Romney's defeat. So my attitude toward the coming election is a huge yawn and shrug.

“....Then you know what to do.....”

Very true. Newt chooses to attempt to influence the
platform because he understands the ramifications of
another four years of the current administration.
I would rather see the conservative movement stay
relevant by pushing Romney than standing by and
watching while an unencumbered Obama takes the nation
past the point of salvation. Those that say
there is NO difference between the two are
engaging in pure hyperbole.
