Haley Barbour: Obama's cash will let him define Romney
The Hill ^ | 04/26/12 11:57 AM ET | Cameron Joseph

Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) predicted the air war between President Obama and Mitt Romney would start in earnest soon, partly because Obama has the cash right now to define the presumptive GOP nominee before he can define himself.

"Obama didn't have to run a primary so he's sitting on a stack of money so tall that a show dog couldn't jump over it," Barbour said at an event Thursday hosted by the GOP-aligned Resurgent Republic. "He can't run on his record, and so the time to really try to run down the Republican, carpet bomb him, is about to start."

Barbour, who is involved with the Republican-affiliated outside groups American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS, suggested that if Obama goes on the attack before Romney is prepared to defend himself, the super-PACs would provide some air coverage for him.

"Everybody who wants a new president wants to keep the voters' attention on those policies and the results of those policies," Barbour told The Hill.

The groups have already raised a combined $100 million and have millions in cash on hand. They've been running ads attacking Obama for months, including an ad released this morning that attacked Obama's appearance on the "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" TV show.

The Obama campaign team has around $100 million cash on hand, according to April fundraising reports, while Romney has about $10 million cash on hand. Romney and the Republican National Committee recently announced a joint fundraising effort.

The attack ad, which served Romney's campaign so well in the GOP primaries, may be his undoing in the general election.

I don’t like Romney. Cannot stand the guy, but there aren’t enough bombs to stop me from voting for him against Obama.

If it’s between those two we don’t have a choice and it looks like the Republicans have done it to us again.

How many times has Romney called the Marxist “a nice guy”?

Run clips of those, like Cavuto is doing right now.

President Obama has raised less by this point in time than Candidate Obama had raised by this point in time in 2008. He isn't getting the big business payoffs he got last time. Things are bad, but not as hopeless as this article makes it seem. Hopelessness only shows up when you consider that if Obama loses Romney wins.

Romney’s ONLY advantage in the GOP primary was money. He will not have that advantage going forward against Obama.

All those who DIDN’T support NEWT - take heed, you are about to see where your pride in your ‘so called conservative candidate’ got you!!

You were DUPED!!

Go NEWT!! The candidate with a PROVEN Conservative record and a fighter for Our Country - the antithesis of Mitt and Barry and a record the other candidates only wished they had!

It will define Romney to those who are willing to listen and believe what the ads say.

To others it will just reinforce his idiocy and racist class warfare.

Newt can use the Harding strategy at the convention.

In 1920, Harding started with 7% of the vote on the first ballot and ended up with 70% of the vote on the tenth ballot.

Go, Newt!

Maybe Obama will paint Romney as a Conservative and make him more likeable by the GOP base :-)

Thanks for that. I didn’t know. One more reason I want Newt for his proposed teaching of our constitution/background of our country to the nation - like Dave Barton does, a supporter of Newt’s. .
