J.J. Abrams version of 'Lights Out'
To: Kartographer
I was just watching it. I don’t trust hollyweird/network TV, though. “Lights Out” was a good read and an interesting comparison to “Patriots” by Rawles.

When you talk about destruction, don’t you know that you can count me out/in.
Thanks Kartographer.

When you talk about destruction, dont you know that you can count me out/in.The Lost John Lennon Interview
"Power to the People"
TA (interviewer): In a way you were even thinking about politics when you seemed to be knocking revolution?
JL (Lennon): Ah, sure, 'Revolution' . There were two versions of that song but the underground left only picked up on the one that said 'count me out'. The original version which ends up on the LP said 'count me in' too; I put in both because I wasn't sure. There was a third version that was just abstract, musique concrete, kind of loops and that, people screaming. I thought I was painting in sound a picture of revolution--but I made a mistake, you know. The mistake was that it was anti-revolution.
On the version released as a single I said 'when you talk about destruction you can count me out'. I didn't want to get killed. I didn't really know that much about the Maoists, but I just knew that they seemed to be so few and yet they painted themselves green and stood in front of the police waiting to get picked off. I just thought it was unsubtle, you know. I thought the original Communist revolutionaries coordinated themselves a bit better and didn't go around shouting about it. That was how I felt--I was really asking a question. As someone from the working class I was always interested in Russia and China and everything that related to the working class, even though I was playing the capitalist game.

Living without electricity for 15 years? Why do they look freshly showered, well fed, healthy? Why do their clothes look like they just came from a boutique? Salon haircuts and whiter than white teeth?

I don't know if I can trust NBC either.
Or CBS. Wasn't Jericho on CBS? I liked Jericho until, maybe it was just me, they seemed to insinuate the guy responsible for all the Nukes ( the bald guy) was Dick Cheney. That made me not feel so bad after it was canceled. I always felt Gerald McRaney and a few others left the show after seeing the following seasons scripts. But my husband thinks I'm just into conspiracies!

I can wind my own generator, there are tons of wire out there to salvage.... I'm not going without 'lektrikity for very long. Humans were making it back around the Civil War era. It's not rocket surgery.

Grab any '50s or '60s boys activity book and it shows the basics. Nails, wood, wire, magnet. You can scale up from there.
Formulas and designs are available in normal college level engineering books for more advanced units.
Unless you get into 3-phase, the math isn't hard.
I grew up doing stuff like that and building radios from scratch.

15 years later the human race is too stupid to figure out how develop sources of light, other than candles.
The premise is a bit farfetched.
Will aliens eventually show up to save mankind?

From what I read on the Wiki article, this looks like cr*p. It's not only a survival tale, it has a heavy conspiracy overtone (the family at the center of the plot has an item that can determine what caused the "blackout" and possibly reverse it. All the warlords know about it, and are trying to get it). Lost was a good show, but there's not a lot of need to try to come up with all sorts of variations on it.
If they were going to do this right, they'd go for a variation of William R. Forstchen's "One Second After" or John Birmingham's "After America" series and stick strictly to the established plots.
Or, even better, they'd turn to Eric Flint's "1632" series. Which is a much better story and premise ... and one with enough in print now to easily support a 10-season TV run.

No, aliens do not save man, they serve man!
